Worcester Festival
We have received the result of the singing entries in the recent Worcester Arts Festival and are delighted to advise parents of the following successes: Holly Jennings - 2nd place, distinction; Keely Jennings – merit; Victoria Bartlett - 2nd place, distinction; Henry James – merit. Holly Jennings was invited to perform at the Winners Concert and won both the Prose Reading 8 Years and under and Verse Speaking 8 Years and under where she gained honours in both classes. Well done to these children and to all who competed in the Festival.
A number of members of the P.A. Committee will be retiring in June after serving for a number of years. We are very grateful to them for their terrific work in support of the P.A. The events that are enjoyed by all are the result of a dedicated approach by those who have served on the Committee. The retirements mean that we will need to take on new members. This is not an onerous commitment, with an average of two or three meetings a term, although it would be helpful if new members were able to offer assistance at some of the events which take place during the year, such as the Christmas Fair or the Summer Ball. If you are interested you should chat to one of the members of the existing committee or advise the office of your willingness to be involved. Fiona Bulpitt, current Chair of the P.A., would be delighted to hear from you. The date of the AGM, at which a new Committee will be agreed, is Tuesday 7th June.
We would like to thank all parents for their support of the recent book fair – as a result of the fair new books for the library and classrooms will be purchased using the generous commission achieved from the book sales.
Term ends tomorrow at 4-00p.m. There will be no after school activities or late club on this occasion. Parents who wish to do so may collect their children from 3-00p.m. onwards on the final day of term. Next term begins on Tuesday 26th April. Activities will begin on the first day of term. Activities lists will be circulated in the holiday mailing and will also be on the website.
At the start of next term 5JMB will be involved in their Malvern Camp. There is a significant Geography focus to this camp, which begins a very busy term of camping at Hawford. 5JMB will be at Malvern on Wednesday 27th April and Thursday 28th April. 5JBR will be away at Malvern the following week on Tuesday 3rd May and Wednesday 4th May.
Parents are reminded that tomorrow is a non-uniform day in support of this year's charities. Children may dress in their home clothes and they are asked to bring in a donation of £1 towards the charitable fund.
Members of the P.A. Committee are reminded that the first meeting of the new term will be held on Tuesday 26th April at 7-30p.m. The meeting will be focusing on two big events for next term, the May Fete on Thursday 5th May and the Summer Ball on Saturday 25th June. Parents may wish to make a note of these dates – full information will follow shortly.
Our Year 6 children will be involved in Cycling training after school on Tuesday 26th, Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th April and Tuesday 3rd May with the sessions beginning at
We will be holding a whole school street party on Thursday 28th April, from 1-30p.m. We will be setting out the tables along the roadway that runs from Kindergarten down to the Art Room, with a tea being served and a party atmosphere guaranteed. During the afternoon all children will be attending a Punch and Judy show. We would be pleased if children could come into school on the day dressed in red, white and blue. On the day we are also requesting that the children can bring in items for the Fete, which takes place the following week. We would be pleased to receive bottles for the tombola stall, toys, books and games. There will also be a second hand uniform stall at the Fete. Further details will follow for both events at the start of term.
Many of our children will be involved in the Foundation Concert on Thursday 28th April at 7-30p.m. This will take place in the Cathedral.

During the Easter break our children are offered a Spy Experience day on 21 April. The theme for this day is - MISSION BRAVO. The children will be intelligence officers on the trail of a spynapper - spies are going missing and they have to track down the formidable spynapper before anyone in their team goes missing too. The mission will take them around the world and they will have to use all of their skills to unmask the enemy. We can't reveal any further information at this stage or drastic actions will have to be taken! Forms for this day are available from the office.
Our Year 3 children will be involved in their Malvern Camp next week on Monday 28th March to Wednesday 30th March. This marks the start of the 2011 Hawford camping season, with all of the children in Years 2 to 6 involved in camps between now and June.
This year's House Quiz event will take place on the final day of term, Friday 1st April.
Parents of children from Reception to Year 6 are invited to Ms Turk's assembly on Wednesday 30th March to promote links between Art lessons at school and creativity at home. Also on Wednesday 30th, parents are invited to a sketchbook making workshop in the Art Room from 3-00p.m. We are hoping that this will lead to the production of family creative holiday books. We will be holding an exhibition of these on 12th May alongside the first Informal Concert. Please see our website for a letter with full details of all these events.
Following this week's auditions the final of this year's Talent Show will be on Thursday 31st March at 2-30p.m. in the Cobb.
Next week will be Charity Week and this will involve the children in a number of charitable events during the week in support of this year's chosen charities. We will be seeing all of the usual fund raising events taking place during the week including cake sales and busking along with new events such as film shows in the Music Room at lunchtime. On Friday 1st April, the final day of term, we will be having a non-uniform day, with the request that the children bring in a donation of £1 towards this year's charities. During the week the children will need small amounts for cake sale and the like. A full list of Charity week events will be sent home by the end of this week.

We wish to extend a big thank you to all parents for their support of the recent Forest School Day. The children looked terrific in their forest costumes and we raised the sum of £423.91 towards Forest School equipment on the day.
Next week will see this year's house football and netball competitions taking place.
We have a number of visitors joining us for assembly next week. Mr Keyes, Head of King's School, will be taking our assembly on Monday 21st March. Pancake Day
It was good to see the children enjoying the Pancake Day races on Tuesday and also to see so many parents joining us for the races. All of our children took part, flipping pancakes as they raced around the hard surface. Events like this are so important in the life of the school, as they bring the whole school community together. It was an exceptional morning with fine weather, some very competitive races and plenty of support for the competitors from the terrace seating, where all of the children were sat. Well done to all of the children and thanks to Mrs Goodayle and Mr Broderick, along with the rest of the staff, for a super event. Photographs of the Pancake Day races can be found on the website. Talent Show
On 31st March we will have the final of this year's Talent Show. Children from Year 1 to Year 6 can enter this event, with auditions taking place in the week beginning Monday 21st March. Entries can be individual or by group, with no restrictions placed on the type of entry. Following the lunchtime auditions, the finalists will be announced on Monday 28th March.
Next week sees an Open Week at Hawford from Monday 14th March to Friday 18th March. Visits to the school can take place at any stage during the week. Although there is no need to book a time for a visit, a booking would be appreciated as it would allow us to plan more effectively for tours. Existing parents may wish to be aware that we do have a few Reception places for 2011 but it is looking highly unlikely that there will be any places for external applicants for places in Reception classes in 2012. Similarly, Kindergarten 2 places for September 2011 are in very short supply and Kindergarten 1 places for the same starting date are beginning to be taken. It is looking likely that the only sure route through to a Reception place is going to be through our Kindergarten as interest levels are high. Places in other year groups are also quite limited. Early application is advised.
Our Year 6 children will be visiting London next week, from Monday 14th March to Wednesday 16th March. This promises to be a super trip with visits to the Golden Hinde, the British Museum, the Natural History museum and the Royal Academy, as well as the usual sights.
Next week sees two House Competitions in the form of the Handwriting Competition on Wednesday 16th March and the House Haiku Competition on Thursday 17th March.
Our Year 4 boys did so well to qualify for the Finals of the National Schools Rugby Competition, being therefore in the final 12 schools involved in this prestigious event. The boys lost three out of three in their group against really tough opposition but they can be proud of their efforts and attitude. The quality of the competition was very impressive and qualifying for this event was quite an achievement.
We will see a number of schools visiting next week on the occasions of two football tournaments. On Wednesday 16th March we will be hosting a number of local independent schools while on Thursday 17th March we will be running a special schools football tournament. It may be that we have a good number of visitors on the Wednesday and, if it helps, we would be happy for parents to pick up from 3 to avoid any car parking problems.
There will be an informal concert on Thursday 17th March at 4-15p.m. This concert is open to all children taking an instrument either at school or outside school, whether they are beginners or more experienced performers. Entry forms are available from Mr Peters.
We are really pleased to see so many children entering this year's Worcester Festival. Our children will be competing in the musical entries section on Saturday 12th March and on Saturday 19th March where the entries are for Drama and Singing.
There is still space for a couple more team at the P.A. Quiz Night on Saturday 12th March. This promises to be a great evening, with a fish supper (or a chicken supper) for all participants and a good competitive feel to the event. This is a BYO event as far as drinks are concerned.
In recent netball matches against RGS The Grange the U8 lost 10-4 and the U9 won 10-1. U10 A played very well against Moor Park winning 18-1. U11's played Herford Cathedral where the A's won 17-3 and the B's won 4-1. In football matches this week against King's St Albans the U11 A and B both lost 2-0, U10 A won 6-3 and the U10B lost 5-1. U9 A lost 4-1 v RGS and the U9B lost 7-0 also against RGS. The U8's took part in a tournament at Winterfold with RGS on Tuesday. U8 A lost 1-0 v RGS and 2-0 v Winterfold. The B team lost 2-0 v RGS and won 2-0 v Winterfold.
We wish all children who will have birthdays over the next week a happy birthday. Those who will be celebrating are: Amelia Lees, Dominick Moulder, Oliver Berlet and Charlie Hemingway.

Year 6 Carsington Trip
Thursday 3rd March 2011
We are looking forward to Shrove Tuesday and the opportunity to celebrate Pancake Day. This year Shrove Tuesday falls on 8th March. The whole school will be taking part in Pancake Day races around the hard surface, remembering the housewife from Olney who was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time for the church service. She raced off to church with her frying pan and pancake. In order to make the day special we would like all of the children to take part wearing an apron and a scarf. We will provide the pancakes but request that all children in Year 2 and Year 4 bring in with them a frying pan for use in the races. If the pans are clearly marked on the underneath with the relevant child's name, we will ensure all pans are returned promptly after the races. The races will start at 9-30a.m. and we will feature a parents' race for any spectators who wish to give it a go.
There will be a meeting next week on Tuesday 8th March at 4-30pm for Year 6 Parents whose children are taking part in the Carsington trip next term.
There will be P.A. Committee Meeting at 7-30p.m. on Tuesday 8th March. This will be in Mrs Bradley's class room.
Our Year 5 and 6 classes will be visiting the Cathedral on Wednesday 9th March for the school's Ash Wednesday Service. Buses for the service will need to depart from Hawford at 8-15a.m. A letter detailing arrangements for this service will be sent out this week.
Parents who have children in 1JW are invited to join us for morning assembly on Wednesday 9th March. The children will be leading this assembly.
Following some exceptional performances in class, the final of this year's Reading competition will take place on Wednesday 9th March at 4-00p.m. Parents are welcome to attend this event.
We will be welcoming teams from a number of local schools on Thursday 10th March for a football competition. This will take place during the afternoon, finishing at around 4-00p.m. Given that there will be a number of additional visitors to the site and parking may be a bit of a squeeze, parents are welcome to collect earlier than normal, from 3-00p.m. if this assists in any way.
Forest School Day
Our younger children will be involved in a Forest School Day on Friday 11th March. This is to celebrate the work that the children undertake in Forest School and also to highlight the improvements that we wish to make to this area. Kindergarten to Year 2 will be involved in this event with children asked to dress up in forest colours. Parents of those year groups are kindly requested to send in cakes for a cake sale on Forest School Day. The sale will be to all children in the school during their break time - children will need to bring in loose change on that day to buy cakes.
There are still spaces for the final few teams at the forthcoming P.A. Quiz Night on Saturday 12th March. This promises to be a great evening, with a fish supper (or a chicken supper) for all participants and a good competitive feel to the event. This is a BYO event as far as drinks are concerned so parents are welcome to bring along something nice to keep the old brain cells active.
We have just recycled another whole box of batteries. This is an excellent item to recycle as it is really important to avoid these getting into landfill. Thanks for bringing them in. The box is back outside the art room waiting to be refilled. Mrs Griffin's class are making houses with lifts during Design Technology. If your workplace has any cardboard photocopy boxes or lids, please could you bring these in for the children to use.
The girls started off the second half of term very well in Netball matches this week with the U9 A team winning 5-0 and the U9 B team winning 6-1 v Moorpark. U10 A lost 9-7 after being ahead 5-0 at half time while U10B won 10-2 v RGS The Grange. U11's played superbly against RGS The Grange with an 11-6 win for the A team and a 10-4 win for the B team. The U11 boys played well in recent Football matches against Moorpark where the A team won 6-0 and the B team won 4-0.
We wish all children who will have birthdays over the next week a happy birthday. Those who will be celebrating are: Daisy Stone, Matthew Lewis, Olivia Sproule, Victoria Bartlett, Alicia Watts, Maisie Martyn-Smith and Sam Martyn-Smith.
