K P Barnett (Hon OV 52-84)

We are sorry to announce the sad news that K P Barnett died on Monday, 19th July 2010.

John Turner (Hon OV 60-96) wrote the following for The Vigornian 1984 on the occasion of Peter Barnett's retirement:

K.P.B.

Peter Barnett — Ken to countless boys — joined the staff in 1952 and in 1958 became housemaster of Creighton House, adding the post of Head of Classics in 1960. He not only held both of these posts until near his retirement last Easter, but for many years co-ordinated the Civics and Welfare section of the Friday activities. He was — and is — a true scholar, but one most reluctant to parade his erudition. Sixth form lessons with him sounded like a gentle ramble through the structure of the older democracies, at the end of which, perhaps to their surprise, his students found that not only had they learnt the facts and ideas for good grades, but much that is as relevant now as then. As a housemaster, he showed an insight into the characters of emerging adults that was only surpassed by his tolerant acceptance of their foibles, but left no one unaware of his set of values. Now, perhaps, retirement will give both Peter and Sheila time for more walks along the Suffolk coast, more concerts and recitals, and we wish them a long and happy one.

Peter had suffered from Parkinsons Disease for some time.  He leaves his two daughters, Deborah and Kate, and his son Roderick.

The funeral took place on Friday 6th August at St Mary's Church, Kempsey.  At Dad's request it was a simple service and he was buried with his wife, Sheila, who died in April 2008. Thank you for all the tributes and expressions of condolence.
