Tributes to Michael Young (Hon OV 71-90)
As I studied economics at A level, I knew Mr Young and his family through various music interests, so I am sorry to hear he has passed away. I am afraid that work commitments prevent me attending the funeral, but I should be most grateful if you could please pass on my commiserations to the family, and especially to Nicholas whom I also knew well while at Kings.
Paul Renney (Cr 78-80)
Michael taught me economics A level and was a very thoughtful, engaging teacher – and always patient with my daft questions. I guess he must have been quite old by now (he seemed it to me then as a 16 year old in 1973!).
He was a big influence on me back then, to the extent I did Economics at university. A "good bloke"
Mark Meyrick (Cr 69-74)
I am very sorry to hear this news.
Mr Young was a hugely impressive, kind and knowledgeable teacher. He taught me economics in the sixth form and made a lasting impression on me and indeed his teachings influenced my future career path. I feel very privileged to have known Mr Young whilst I was at school.
Please pass on my condolences to his family.
Fanos Hira (Os 80-87)
I am so sorry to hear this news. Michael was a key influence in encouraging me to maximise my potential. Guy Stallard (Br 77-84) Mr Young made a profound impression on me with his thoroughness and professional approach. It has been a strong influence on me in my own career as a teacher. Mr Young taught me Economics in the late 1980's and I have fond memories of him and the lessons. He was a great teacher and a very nice man who encouraged my already substantial interest in the subject. Philip Harris (K 79-88)
He will be missed by numerous former pupils.
Many thanks. Michael was also a careere advisor if I remember rightly and told me to become a probation officer. Looking back it made more sense than becoming a journalist.
Mark Ryan (Cl 73-80)
Thanks for conveying the sad news of Michael Young's death. I remember him well, not least, for my 2 years of A Level Economics studying. He was always a kind and caring tutor. My thoughts and condolences go to Nicholas – a direct contemporary of mine at King's (73 – 78) – and to Michael's family.
I was greatly saddened to hear he is no longer with us.
Dan Cowton (Os 82-89)
Please send the family my best regards. Mike taught me economics in the sixth form and we truly enjoyed his time and broad intellectual span. And i got an A!
I was very sorry to receive this news. Mr. Young taught me A'Level economics 83/84 and 84/85 and before that taught me how to play bridge while he was a tutor at Castle House. I very much enjoyed him as a person and his laid back style. I will not be able to make the funeral but please pass on my condolences to his family.
Georgia Subiotto (Ca 80-85)
At school our shared interest in music and gardening was fertile ground for lunch time conversation. I also know that in the days when we had forty-five minute periods, with a five minute gap in between for a double, Michael would often allow a five minute card playing break, to give his sixth formers a breather.
Peter Baseley (Hon OV 73-03)
