Governors give the green light to the SPACE project.
The Governors have given approval to proceed with the development of the first stage of the Sports and Performing Arts Centre with a target date for starting the work in March 2013. The cost for the initial work will be around £9 million and the Governors are calculating that at least 10 to 15 per cent of this cost will be met from a fundraising campaign. The first stage will include the car park, sports hall, fitness suite, dance and drama studios, climbing wall and entrance from Severn Street. If sufficient funds can be raised, they will also complete the sixth form centre in the first stage of the development.
The Governors took this decision based on the continuing strong demand for places at King's and the excellent results achieved by the school over the summer. They are also very aware of the advantages of proceeding with the project as soon as possible to make the most of the competitive building environment which has already seen the overall cost of this project fall from an estimated £12.5 million to £11.5 million
