Past Campaigns

2004 - 2005 The Library Campaign - total raised £200,000

This campaign set out to support the school in achieving library excellence through the construction of what became an award-winning study and research space located at the heart of the school.

The wider school community helped to make a profound influence on the academic life of the school by collectively raising almost £200,000 towards the £1.6 million project.

The names of OVs, parents, friends of the school and grant-making trusts who made donations to this campaign are etched on one of the windows in the Long Gallery in recognition of their support.

The Library is sited on the ground and lower ground floors of School House and it is enhanced by the Long Gallery which now displays pupil artwork, plasma screens showing current news and the Tree Of Knowledge artwork.

It occupies 620 square metres; more than three times the size of the former Library in The Edgar Tower, and it has allowed the school to build on the extensive printed information it has acquired over the years. It has aligned the school with 21st Century, high quality technology to ensure a broad range of relevant information resources are available to all of our pupils.

The Library received recognition in winning two national awards -

The Wood Awards:

  • Winner – Small Projects
  • Winner – Innovation

1986 - 1989 Building for an even better education - total raised £400,000

Led by Ian Brown (Hon OV Staff, 68-89), the campaign had five objectives:

  • The King's School Theatre - the first objective of the appeal was to equip the theatre to allow pupils to explore its full potential. It was completed in 1986 and has since had a major refurbishment. It is a vital area in the school for performances and lectures.
  • The Design and Technology Complex - DT was becoming an increasingly important component in education. King's needed to extend its accommodation for this subject and to re-equip the existing workshops and upgrade the facilities.
  • Bursaries and Scholarships - by increasing the number of scholarships and bursaries available through this fund, King's was able to help more able pupils to join them, whatever their family circumstances. This is something that has remained a priority for the Development Trust since this campaign.
  • The Peter Curle Memorial Sports Field - Peter 'Joe' Curle (Hon OV Staff 50-86) was for many years the public face of King's School Hockey. An all-weather pitch was desperately needed and it was fitting for the pitch, once it was built, to be in memory of Peter Curle. Due to a number of factors, the pitch was never built, much to the disappointed of the campaign supporters. It was even more special then, when in 2010 it was finally built on the site of Bishop Perowne C of E School for both schools to use.
  • The Swimming Pool Development - the appeal allowed the school to invest in a permanent roof over the swimming pool to allow uninterrupted swimming whatever the weather.

King's was able to support these projects thanks to the generosity of parents and OVs who recognised that they or their children had benefited from support given by previous generations. Our current pupils are still benefiting from that generosity today.
