The John Moore Theatre
The Department of Drama and Theatre Studies is based in the John Moore Theatre and uses both the stage and Green Room as teaching spaces. Students from all year groups should get the chance to perform in the theatre at least once.
As well as scripted and devised performances by students on the GCSE and AS/A2 drama courses there are performances by the two Lower School drama clubs (Years 7, 8, 9 and 10) and a major Year 10/11 and Sixth Form production.
There are regular visits from professional drama and dance companies (Actors of Dionysus, Riding Lights, Momentum etc.) and guest speakers have included Philip Pullman, William Hague MP, Rannulph Fiennes and Sir Clement Freud. The theatre is also used for school assemblies, house and year group meetings and lectures for all departments. The junior schools make significant use of the space for competitions, visiting performers, music performances and school productions.
The John Moore Theatre is available for hire and is used extensively by the local community for drama, concerts and lectures, and is a major venue for the triennial visit of the Three Choirs Festival.
In 2003 we hosted a transmission of BBC Question Time. The venue was purpose built in 1987 and re-furbished in 2003; it is equipped to industry standard with computerised lighting, sound and projection.
The department has a significant stock of costume, props, scenery and staging as well as constructional facilities.
Students of all ages have the chance to work in all technical areas.
