Curriculum

Years 7 & 8

We deliver a broad curriculum in the first three years at King's, giving the pupils a grounding in all of the key areas. The subjects studied are: Mathematics, English, Modern Languages, separate Sciences, History, Geography, DT, ICT, Drama, Dance, Latin, Music, Art, RS, PSE, PE & Games.

GCSE

Pupils in Year 9 study seventeen academic subjects, together with PE and Games, and during the course of the year come to understand thoroughly the content and approach of each subject. This helps them to make an informed, guided choice of GCSE subjects. Work towards the GCSE examinations starts in some subjects in Year 9.

All pupils are entered for the GCSE examinations, most of which are taken at the end of the Fifth Form year. In Mathematics the students do the iGCSE examination. Pupils usually choose to study ten GCSE subjects for the two years in Year 10 and Year 11. The subjects that all pupils take are:

English: both Language and Literature, leading to two GCSEs.
Mathematics
Physics, Chemistry and Biology: leading either to three GCSEs or to a "dual award" examination.
A Modern Foreign Language: at least one of French, German or Spanish.
Physical Education and Games (non-examined)
PSE and Religious Education (non-examined)

Additionally, pupils choose three subjects from the list below:

Art
German
Drama
History
Design & Technology
Latin

Sixth Form

Sixth Form pupils at King's are expected to study four subjects in the AS examinations in the Lower Sixth and to continue with three or four of these subjects in the Upper Sixth in the A2 examinations.

At the end of the Lower Sixth year, pupils may choose to drop one of the subjects they have studied to AS level. All pupils will be expected to sit the AS examinations at the end of the Lower Sixth year. Modules are taken at the winter and summer sessions.
