The Geography Curriculum
Geography is taught in mixed ability sets throughout the School. In their first three years (Years 7-9), all pupils acquire skills and knowledge broadly based on the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3. Geography is a very popular choice both at GCSE and A-level. In Years 10 and 11, the AQA Specification A is delivered to over 180 GCSE candidates covering both human and physical themes as well as a Controlled Assessment based on fieldwork. There are currently 79 students studying Geography in the 6th Form who are taught the AQA AS-Level specification (L6th) and AQA A2-Level specification (U6th).  There are 4 modules over the two year course and there is no assessed coursework although fieldwork remains important. The course includes contemporary geography such as World Cities and Natural Hazards as well as the mix of traditional physical and human topics. All candidates are required to attend a residential trip to the Gower coast (L6th) and a visit to Birmingham (U6th).  There are 2 exams at AS and a further 2 at A2 although these will be slightly longer in length and require both short and essay style answers from candidates. It is now possible for the strongest students to achieve an A* at A-level (180+ UMS marks in the A2 modules).

Teaching time for each year group is allocated as follows:

  • Year 7 (Lower Fourth) 2 periods & 20 mins prep per week.
  • Year 8 (Upper Fourth) 2 periods & 25 mins prep per week.
  • Year 9 (Lower Remove) 3 periods & 30 mins prep per week.
  • Year 10 (Upper Remove) 4 periods & one hour prep per week.
  • Year 11 (Fifth Form) 4 periods & one hour prep per week.
  • Lower Sixth: 8 periods & 4 hours private study per week (2 teachers).
  • Upper Sixth: 8 periods & 6 hours private study per week (2 teachers).
