History
Studying History will helps pupils understand how the world has been shaped over time by events and people. Pupils will appreciate the importance of change and begin to think like detectives as they piece together the past from fragments of evidence. And because it helps us to put a really good argument together, it is excellent grounding for a career in law, business or management.
We use a great variety of sources to teach History including, audio-visual material, the Internet, CDs, slides, tapes, field trips and looking at original material. Our History library has an excellent selection of publications, which we add to all the time. The department is very enthusiastic and pupils are expected to work hard.
Fieldwork includes trips to France and Belgium to visit World War One battlefields. Our History Society makes the past fun with trips to historic local sites like Goodrich Castle and others further afield such as Hampton Court. Add in war games, model making and behind-the-scenes views of places not normally open to the public and History really comes alive.
Pupils will learn about World and British History from the start of World War One to the 1960s, when we faced the prospect of a nuclear war. We cover the rise of leaders like Hitler and Stalin, the causes of World War Two and the Cold War between Russia and the West.
