Key Skills

Key Skills is taught in the Sixth Form as a five-term course for one double period per week. In the Lower Sixth, during the first half of the Summer term, time is devoted to supervised study and the remainder to research into higher education. The course finishes at the end of the spring term in the Upper Sixth.

Through a combination of small group activities and talks given by visiting speakers, we aim to develop skills in communication, the use of ICT and working in teams. The course covers PSHE topics like study skills, time management, drugs, alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception and body image.

Key skills prepares students for life after school, with for example a survival course in microwave cookery, expands their cultural horizons and gives them careers and UCAS advice. It's quite an ambitious programme but one that we hope students will find both stimulating and useful.

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking is an increasingly popular subject for students who are thinking of studying, amongst other courses, Medicine, Veterinary Science and Law. It involves 70 minutes after school and one hour's preparation in the student's own time. Critical Thinking facilitates independent thinking, examining the credibility of evidence, forming reasoned judgements, then assessing and developing arguments. We study the OCR course, taking the first module (worth 40%) in January and the second module (worth 60%) in May. Both modules are assessed by examination; there is no coursework.
