About the Library

"Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it"
Samuel Johnson

This superb award-winning study and research space is located at the heart of the school and aims to be the central information resource; be it daily information displayed on the Long Gallery's plasma screen, or curriculum-based materials to support students and staff. Resources for recreation and to encourage a love of reading are also a priority. The Library offers print and non-print resources including audio-visual materials, and on-line information that can be consulted at school or at home - click on Weblinks pages for a comprehensive list of subject-based weblinks.

On the upper floor, print and computer resources are housed together to emphasise the importance of both. All students have access throughout the school day. Sixth Formers have their own study space, the Bolland Room, on the lower floor, also with computers. A large range of newspapers and magazines is taken and displayed in the lower floor reading area. During lesson-time, students work either as individuals doing private study, or as classes researching curriculum topics. All Year 7 pupils receive training on use of the Library, and on research skills.

The School Motto is displayed in Greek above the Long Gallery in the Library and may be translated as follows:

What can be taught I learn,
What can be found out, I seek
What can be prayed for I ask of the Gods.

(Sophocles, fragment 843)
