Planning
There are two Library Committees who discuss and plan Library development and policy. One is comprised of members of staff, and the other of pupils. Committees usually meet once every half term.
Events
We have a very lively pupil reading group called WRAITH which meets once every half term. The group agrees on a title to read and then meets to discuss it - helped along with cookies and doughnuts. We had read "Twilight" long before it became a best-seller! During the year we celebrate school and national events such as "Words Alive" and World Book Day.
Rules
A complete set of rules and code of conduct can be found in the Library.
Borrowing items
L4th - 5th form pupils: 4 items in total, only 1 music CD, and 1 DVD may be borrowed at a time.
Loan periods are: books 2 weeks, music CDs 1 week, DVDs 1 night.
6th form pupils: 12 items maximum by arrangement. Loan periods are: 2 weeks for fiction books, 4 weeks for non-fiction books, audio-visual rules are the same as for lower school pupils.
Pupils with overdue loans will not be allowed to borrow anything new. We do not charge fines!
Newspapers and magazines may not be borrowed unless by arrangement with the Librarian.
Computer use
The school's acceptable use policy applies in the Library.
In particular: no external devices owned by pupils should be connected to Library computers and thence to the network without the specific permission of the Librarian; pupils may not stream live radio, i-player, or software such as Spotify, as the bandwidth generally available to the school may be affected by such use.
Subject-specific software (such as 2D Design, Autograph) is installed on most of the Library's computers. Pupils are requested to ask before they print anything, particularly if templates or formatting may be an issue.
Besides the desk machines, we have 6 laptops available for use by pupils on the upper floor.
Photocopying
We respect copyright law; exemptions may be made only if covered by the school's educational licence.
Services
We are members of the British Library, and items needed by pupils can usually be borrowed from them if we can't purchase them. We aim to obtain urgent items within one week.
Black & white printing, and photocopying is available free of charge. Colour printing and photocopying is free of charge but subject to permission from a member of staff.
We sell a small range of stationery at the counter.
Room spaces (such as the McTurk Room) can be pre-booked by staff or pupils, subject to the Librarian's approval. Advance notice of Bolland Room bookings by staff must be given to the Librarian.
Code of Conduct
Please remember that the Library's purpose is as a place of research, study or quiet relaxation. There are other places in the school for socialising. You will be asked to leave if you are disturbing other people.
Upper floor and magazine area: a quiet rule applies; you are allowed to talk quietly as long as no one else is disturbed by it. Use the McTurk Room by arrangement if you need to discuss something as a group, otherwise the McTurk Room is available as a quiet room for individual study.
Bolland Room: this is a silent room for 6th form study and will be supervised by a member of staff most of the time.
Apart from 6th form, pupils' school bags must be left outside in the Long Gallery bag rack. All sports bags must be left outside. We ask 6th form to put their bags under the tables so that they aren't a trip hazard.
All pupils may use i-pods, mp3 players, mobile phones, for music and data functions, i.e. as aids to study, but not for playing games or watching films.
All pupils may not make or take mobile phone voice calls anywhere in the Library. If it rings, you must leave the Library to take the call. You wouldn't do it in a class room, so please don't do it in the Library.
No food or drink is allowed in the Library at any time, apart from water in small bottles with sport-style cap.
General rules concerning school uniform apply in the Library. Pupils on study leave but revising in the Library are expected to wear uniform.
In the event of a fire-drill or real emergency, alarms will sound. Please follow the Librarian's instructions in the event of an evacuation.
