Chemistry

Chemistry is a key science that is almost essential for those who want to go on to be vets, doctors, dentists and pharmacists for example. Chemistry is one of the three sciences studied up to GCSE, the others being Biology and Physics.

The course is practically based with challenging exercises that develop laboratory skills as pupils learn such topics as rates of reaction, structure and chemical processes. Pupils will also gain an understanding of industrial processes, such as those that produce ammonia, fertilisers and explosives. By the end of the course pupils will recognise the importance of chemistry in our everyday lives.

Two types of Chemistry A level may be taken: a traditional Edexcel course which involves developing relevant theories in class with supporting practical work; or the Salters course, a more modern approach which teaches chemical principles by looking at how they are used in the real world. For example, the chemistry of hydrocarbons is used to give a comprehensive understanding of the use of fuels in cars.
