1st and 2nd XI Secure Victories in Severn Shield Hockey Against RGS Worcester
The King’s Worcester 1st and 2nd hockey teams delivered two outstanding performances against RGS Worcester in an exciting evening of sport, culminating in King’s 1st XI lifting the Severn Shield for the first time after two years of shared titles. Both the 1st and 2nd teams demonstrated their skill, determination, and teamwork in front of a large, supportive crowd at the newly resurfaced Astro pitch.
The 1st XI began with high intensity, immediately putting pressure on RGS. A brilliant run from Bryony set up an early goal, finished expertly by Hermione. King’s dominated possession from the outset, connecting fluid passes and mounting a series of attacking plays. Captain Ruby doubled the lead, skilfully weaving through several defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
Despite RGS defending short corners effectively, King’s relentless pressing kept their opponents under constant pressure. Shortly after half-time, RGS pulled a goal back, but King’s remained calm, trusting their game plan and continuing to build play from the back. The defence, led by some outstanding tackles and disciplined play, denied RGS any further opportunities. In the closing minutes, King’s controlled possession brilliantly, securing a 2-1 victory and finally lifting the Severn Shield. The team celebrated joyously with friends, family, and the wider King’s community, even as the rain poured down.
In the 2nd XI fixture, King’s also impressed, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory. From the start, the team showed high energy and a positive mindset, maintaining the majority of possession. The forwards and midfielders worked together seamlessly, linking precise passes and making quick decisions to consistently challenge the RGS defence. The depth of the squad allowed for regular rotations, ensuring the team kept their energy levels up throughout.
The defenders were outstanding, repeatedly winning the ball and creating opportunities by carrying it wide. Their tactical play paid off just before half-time, resulting in a well-executed pass into the D and a decisive goal. In the second half, the team faced physical and mental challenges but held their nerve to see out the 1-0 win.
