4TO master the trumpet in just five hours!
The arts play a central role in life at King’s Hawford, with all pupils enjoying music, art, drama, and dance as part of the curriculum and pupils in 4TO have recently mastered the trumpet.
In Year 4 pupils enjoy a Trumpet Experience led by Mrs Hughes, the Director of Music. The Trumpet Experience takes place weekly during timetabled music lessons. At the start of this academic year, Mrs O’Neill’s class began with an introductory lesson. Mrs Hughes was very impressed that all the children were able to produce a sound from their first lesson.
The aim is for every pupil to produce a sound and all pupils are encouraged to read from traditional notation. Pupils are allowed to take their instruments home in between trumpet lessons, and, although practice is positively encouraged, it is not strictly stipulated that it must happen. It is brilliant to see how much the pupils enjoy taking part in these sessions. Several pupils have expressed an interest in continuing trumpet lessons, with George C already signed up to continue his musical journey with the trumpet!
On Monday morning 4TO performed in assembly in front of their parents and peers. The class treated the audience to a performance of Hot Cross Buns. A smaller group of children then performed Oh When the Saints, demonstrating a wider note range.
It is remarkable that after only five hours of tuition all pupils were able to perform to their parents and the whole school in assembly. 4RC have now started their trumpet tuition and we look forward to hearing their progress in the future. Anyone wishing to pursue individual trumpet lessons should email Mrs Hughes on shughes@ksw.org.uk
This is just one example of what can be achieved as King’s Hawford pupils are offered the chance to try their hand at several different musical instruments through their time in the School. During Year 1, for example, pupils take part in a Violin Experience; you can read more about this year’s cohort here.
