A Majestic Day at Warwick Castle for Year 2
Warwick Castle provided the perfect setting for an unforgettable adventure for our Year 2 pupils on Monday! Both classes enjoyed a truly immersive day of discovery, stepping back in time to explore what life was really like in a medieval castle, sights, sounds, smells and all!
The day began with a walk around the castle’s dry moat, where pupils were immediately challenged with a question that fired up their imaginations: “How would you invade the castle and scale these towering walls?” Ideas flowed fast, from catapults and ladders to secret tunnels and flying dragons. Once through the portcullis and safely past the murder holes above, the children entered The Great Hall, where our two birthday boys were transformed into Saxon and Norman soldiers. There was great excitement as everyone had a chance to hold a real, weighty sword, a true knightly moment for all!
Bravery was once again put to the test as the children descended into The Kingmaker exhibition, where they experienced the sights, sounds and even the smells of medieval life. The “castle loo,” which emptied straight into the moat, caused plenty of laughter and grimaced faces!
After a quick lunch, it was time for the Birds of Prey show, a spectacular highlight of the day. From the silent sweep of a beautiful barn owl to the dramatic wingspan of a mighty condor, the pupils watched in awe and made sure to hang tightly onto their sandwiches! Next came a visit to the Time Tower, where the children discovered how Warwick Castle had changed over the centuries. The moving portraits at the end of the exhibition caused huge giggles as faces suddenly sprang to life.
With energy still to spare, Year 2 climbed bravely to the very top of the motte, retracing the footsteps of those who lived long ago. From the summit, they enjoyed breathtaking views across the landscape before heading down to witness the mighty Trebuchet in action, a jaw-dropping demonstration of medieval engineering, complete with a countdown and an enormous boulder launch.
The day finished with a well-earned burst of fun at Zog World, where the children ran, climbed and played before boarding the coach home, full of stories and smiles. It was a fabulous day out, filled with curiosity, laughter and adventure. Year 2 were exceptional ambassadors for King’s St Alban’s, polite, engaged and an absolute delight to take on this medieval journey.
