King's Hawford

A View from the Barn – 17th June 2021

From Mrs Phillips

This week has seen a great deal of creativity in all areas of the school. Whether it was baking, eco-fashion design or experimental pizza toppings, we have all been busy.

It all began with the Mrs Marshall-Walker’s ‘Great Hawford Bake Off’ heats on Monday. The Pre-Prep children were tasked with baking some delicious tarts, and the Prep children created some delicious, and occasionally rather unusual, tray-bake combinations. After a good deal of tasting and ruminating a winner from each House (Bredon, Kinver, Malvern and Clent) was selected. Many congratulations to Eva M, Emily S, Sam M and Erin L. Prep -Prep winners were Chloe T, Elliot C, Josiah and Lyra. These talented chefs will bake again, on site and on camera, in an exciting live final on Friday.

Tuesday was our charity Green Day, and the staff and children came to school dressed in some truly inspired outfits, all constructed from recycled materials. Thank you to our talented art teacher, Mrs Gregory, for creating a beautiful newspaper, bubble wrap and plastic bag one-off for me, which I wore with great pride. Winning designs from each year group were invited to a Trashion Show along a catwalk in the Barn, complete with lights, music and an excellent compere in the form of Mr Stigant. The day also included a domino rally with cereal boxes lined up around the tennis court. This was a Hawford first, and a double win on the charity front, as the cereal is all being taken to Worcester Food Bank, where it will be much appreciated.

On Wednesday it was a real King’s family affair, as we welcomed Miss Arnold from ‘Big Kings’ who presented an assembly for our Year 4 and 5 pupils, and also Director of Music, Mr Taranczuk, who was treated to some outstanding performances from our potential Music Scholars.

On Friday, artist and craftsman Matthew Lloyd will return to fire up our new pizza oven for the first time. The results are destined to be quite delicious, largely due to an incredibly generous donation from Oscar and Lily’s dad, who arrived at my office with a sack of 00 flour, pizza sauce, mozzarella, and a wealth of other exotic and authentic Italian toppings as a gift for the school. Multo Buono!
