Barnabas Day- Ranga Chand (S 58-64)

We were privileged to have another successful Barnabas Day with international economist and financial author Ranga Chand (S 58-64).

After King’s, Ranga went to the University of Toronto where he studied Economics. He has held senior positions with Canada's Department of Finance and served as a director of the Conference Board of Canada before joining a major stock brokerage firm. He has also taught economics at the University of Waterloo and has represented Canada at numerous economic forums, including the OECD in Paris and the United Nations.

Between 2000 and 2003 he hosted popular television show "Talking Mutual Funds with Ranga Chand" which aired weekly on Canada’s Report on Business Television (ROBTV) for three years and reached over 4.3 million viewers nationwide. Ranga has also published a number of books, including ‘Best of the Best Mutual Funds’ and ‘Getting Started With Mutual Funds’.

Ranga began the day by giving an Address in College Hall about his time at King’s, how it has shaped his life, and how he was encouraged to “just apply yourself more diligently and press on”- a lesson which has stayed with him and helped him through his career. To listen to Ranga’s inspiring address in full please click here

Following this Ranga spoke to pupils at King’s St Alban’s about ‘What is Economics?’ where they had a session learning about supply and demand. He was then awarded his Baranbas award and signed the prestigious Barnabas book along with Headmaster, Matthew Armstrong and Head of School, Alice Evans. Throughout the day, Ranga gave talks to sixth form Economics and Business students linking in with topics in their curriculum including the perceived move from Globalisation to Nationalistion, the potential reappearance of an asset market bubble, and the prospects for the UK economy. Ranga also gave a Careers Talk in the Bolland Room with a Q & A afterwards.

It was a superb day and we are so pleased to welcome Ranga as the newest member of the Barnabas Group. To find out more about the Barnabas Group and some of its most recent members please click here.

OV Hayley Simmonds representing England at Commonwealth Games 2018

OV, Hayley Simmonds (Cr 99-06) made the Worcester news this week as she is among 27 Team England cyclists heading to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia.  At King’s Hayley was a keen rower, representing England in the 2004 Home International Regatta and she then switched to cycling whilst studying at Cambridge University.

Sarah Winckless, Chef de Mission for Commonwealth Games England said: “This is a really busy time of year for our cycling teams with the spring classics on the road, the world cup season starting for the mountain bikers and the world championships on the track so I’m delighted we are taking such a strong team to the Games.”  Hayley will be joining the rest of the England team at their 10-day preparation camp in Brisbane.

A trip to archives

Patrick Lockley (Ca 61-64) made a special trip to Archives on Monday 5th March during his time visiting the UK from France where he now lives. Patrick met up with King's archivist Harriet to look up Castle House photographs from between 1962-1964 and helped to put a number of names to faces.

He also told of memories of a number of teachers (including Mr Annett, Mr Sheppard, Mr Aldridge, Mr Cash, Mr Knight and Mr Curle), some of his school friends and contemporaries, and some more general memories of his schooldays.  One of these was hearing about the assassination of JKF, in his study, through a school friend; when the boys didn’t initially believe this friend (apparently he could sometimes be a bit of a prankster), he told them to put the radio on for confirmation.

It was lovely to see Patrick and if any other OVs would like a trip to archives please do get in touch by emailing development@ksw.org.uk.

History & Polictics Talk

It was lovely to have Andrew Reekes (Ch 64-69) speak to some of the sixth form history students about the politics and relationship between Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill. Andrew has spent a career in education and following on from his role as Head of History at Tonbridge, Cranleigh and Cheltenham, he was Acting Warden, at Radley College until his retirement in 2012.

Andrew has published several history books, including Speeches that Changed Britain: Oratory in Birmingham and The Rise of Labour 1899-1951, and has now written a commissioned work on the comparative legacies of George Cadbury and Joseph Chamberlain. Andrew is also Chair of Trustees here at the King’s School.

Football Champions

Just over a thousand spectators including Development Director, Liz Elliott and Head of Alumni Relations, Sophie Borrillo-McLellan attended Sixways on Wednesday 7th March to watch The King’s School, Worcester retain the Worcester City Challenge Cup, courtesy of a 2-2 draw with RGS. It was lovely to see many OVs in attendance supporting the team and Liz and Sophie had a great time catching up with some of them after the match.
