Bev Returns with a Project Gambia Update

It was wonderful to welcome Bev back to King’s Hawford today. She has just returned from The Gambia, and we were delighted to hear an update on what she has been up to since we last saw her.

Bev started her talk by sharing a message from Philomen, a Head Teacher from one of the schools that Project Gambia supports. Philomen wished all members of the Hawford community a Happy New Year. Last summer, one of our pupils managed to raise an impressive £4,395 for Project Gambia, and Bev was delighted to award Ffion W with a certificate and special pin badge in front of the school to commemorate her brilliant fundraising. Thanks to Teigen and Ffion’s efforts, a brand new classroom has been built at St Peter’s School. Money raised by the King’s Hawford Community last year has been spent on a number of different projects.

Some of the £3,000 donated by our school has been used to ensure that children such as Modou receive an education they wouldn’t have otherwise have done, and are guaranteed food each day. Modou is five years old and lives with 11 members of his extended family. The family live in poverty but, through our donations, Modou has been given a place at the Wisdom Nursery School.

The money is making a huge difference to lots of children. It has been used to buy tables and chairs for the schools Project Gambia supports, as well as exercise books. The pencil-cases that were donated before Christmas have made their way to The Gambia and, on her return next month, Bev will be distributing those.

We are extremely proud of the relationship that we as a school have built with Bev and the Project Gambia Charity. It is brilliant for our school community to be able to see the direct impact of our fundraising. Bev finished her talk by presenting King’s Hawford with a banner that has been made by schools in The Gambia to show our close link. It has been made from King’s School uniforms and uniforms from those schools we support. The banner will be on display around the School soon after half term.
