Brothers’ Birthday Visit

Head of Alumni Relations, Sophie Borrillo-McLellan, and Development Assistant, Amanda Sutcliffe, were very privileged to see OV brothers George (Ch 43-50) and Maurice (Dayboys 48-54) Hartley this week, especially since it was on the occasion of George’s 90th birthday!

Due to visiting restrictions currently in place at School, we could only tour outside. However, that still gave rise to many memories and lively discussions, as well as giving the brothers the opportunity to see how the School has developed. George and Maurice bumped into Foundation Director of Sport and Director of Rugby, Jonny Mason (Hon OV), who was delighted to hear about both George (who played for the 1st XV) and Maurice’s (whose rugby career spanned many years) sporting memories. The brothers were thrilled to see from the outside the newer buildings, such as the Keyes Building and The Michael Baker Boathouse. George remembered Michael from School. They were equally tickled to find that Geography is still taught in the exactly the same building.

Both brothers were keen to review what King’s Archivist, Harriet Patrick, had found in the archives, including mentions in The Vigornian from the 50s – prompting some lovely stories of their school friends. Sophie and Amanda were hugely impressed by Maurice and George’s memories, both easily recalling friends and teachers in great detail.

It is always a delight to meet with OVs and we were honoured to help George celebrate his 90th birthday with fond recollections of days gone by.
