Castle visit reinforces classroom learning
This term Year 2 have been learning about castles, knights and dragons. Where better than Warwick Castle to visit to enhance such learning?! On a rather soggy Tuesday, a very excited contingent of pupils, accompanied by Mr Roberts and Mr Marsland, departed school for a day of fun and adventure.
On arrival, the children enjoyed a tour of the castle and escaped the rain with a guided tour of the Great Hall. The children and accompanying teachers scaled the heights of Guy’s Tower and spent time exploring the battlements. They learnt how Guy’s Tower was built in the 14th century and was used to host guests of the Earl.
The King Maker museum gave Year 2 an insight into Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick’s involvement in the War of the Roses and how medieval armies prepared for battle. Pupils braved the Castle Dungeon, impressing the teachers with their courage!
The Bowman Show was a highlight for many of the children. The castle’s expert Bowman shared the secrets of the historical sport, demonstrating how the skills and techniques employed by bowmen centuries ago would have protected the fortress from invading armies. The children looked on in wonder as the castle’s resident archer exhibited his expert skills.
Another highlight for many of the pupils was the impressive Falconer’s Quest. The children sat transfixed as an array of beautiful birds swooped and looped above the heads. The children enjoyed lunch in the atmospheric Mill House, perched beside the picturesque River Avon; this was a delightful venue for a spot of lunch.
The trip finished with a visit to Zog Playland, which provided the children with a mix of sensory and physical play opportunities. It was the perfect way for the children to burn off some energy before the journey back to school.
