Eco-Committee selected to lead Earth Conscious School.
Last week, pupils were given the opportunity to put themselves forward for a place of the School’s Eco Committee. Pupils from across the School were keen to gain a place on the Eco Committee, with a view to continuing the excellent work of the previous academic year. Eighteen pupils were selected by their peers via classroom votes. On Friday, members of the Eco Committee were awarded their green Eco Badges in assembly.
Well done to all our newly elected council members:
Year 6 Barnaby, Georgia, Jack and Sartaj
Year 5 Holly, Oliver and Robyn
Year 4 Shaan and Finn
Year 3 Charlotte and Maysie
Year 2 Amelie and Ffion
Year 1 Alex, Alexander and Madeline
Reception Poppy and Monty
The School’s Eco Committee play a very important role within school and are a driving force in our efforts to become an Earth Conscious School. Last academic year it was our Eco Committee who helped King’s Hawford achieve the Eco Schools Green Flag with Distinction. This year’s committee members will be tasked with building on the work done by last year’s committee. Last year, the focus was centred upon Biodiversity, Global Citizenship and Energy. These three key areas of focus will continue and will be added to by this year’s committee as they take into consideration new areas of interest from new members.
Our Eco Committee will meet three times per term. At their first meeting they will appoint a chair and secretary. At King’s Hawford, pupils have plenty of opportunities to take on leadership roles across all year groups. Eco Committee is no different. The Committee will be ably assisted by members of staff but will largely be run by the pupils.
King’s Hawford is committed to becoming a greener and more earth-conscious school; to do this our new committee will need to engage with the whole pupil body. As one of our new committee members said in his recent presentation, “Everyone can become an eco-warrior; it’s just about making small changes every day”.
At King’s Hawford we are fortunate that our whole school community are committed to helping the world become a greener place. The first half of the Summer Term saw the introduction of our biodiversity garden, energy monitors worked tirelessly to ensure that there was no wastage and across the School there has been a focus on reducing and reusing resources where possible.
The Eco Committee will also have the important job of helping to reapply for the Eco Schools Green Flag for next academic year. After last year’s committee achieved this task with distinction, there is pressure on this year’s members. We are happily confident that our brilliant Eco Committee Council for 2022 / 2023 will achieve the same success.
