Embarking On A Viking Adventure

This week, Year 4 embarked on an exciting journey to the land of the Norsemen with a trip to Jorvik (York).

At the DIG Archaeological Centre, the children enjoyed a fascinating lesson on Viking battle tactics and weaponry. They even formed a shield wall—enough to terrify any unsuspecting monks! The group then took part in an excavation, unearthing artefacts from different periods in York’s history.

Next, at the Jorvik Centre, they stepped back in time to experience a Viking village in all its sights and smells, situated on the original site. The most memorable moment of the visit was getting hands-on with a 1200-year-old piece of Viking poo! After a scenic riverside walk and a hearty meal at the Youth Hostel, the children settled down for a well-earned night’s rest.

They woke to a bright, sunny day that began with another pleasant walk along the river, leading them back into the heart of York. With York Minster gleaming in the sunlight, the children eagerly explored its interior, learning about the significance of Saint Peter to the Cathedral. They also visited the crypt, where they heard about Saint William, a local hero.

A walk along York’s ancient city walls allowed the children to imagine defending the city, with a few gruesome ghost stories thrown in for extra excitement. Overall, the trip was a fantastic experience, a true Viking adventure of their own!
