King's St Alban's
15 September
House Harmony at KSA
Houses have always been an important part of King’s St Alban’s life; children mixing and learning from each other across all year groups is an important part of our pastoral system. The King’s St Alban’s competitive spirit remains strong, and throughout the year our four House groups will compete on the sports field and in art, chess, singing and poetry recitation.
On Thursday this week, we were delighted to feel the buzz and strength of our first House activity of the year. Everyone spent time welcoming new children to their Houses and introducing House staff. Icebreaker games, pair-share interviews and pupil interactions saw many laughs and smiles across the faces of children old and new. Children in Bailey bonded by completing some mindfulness activities and relaxation yoga. Wilson calmly played board games and Lego, which allowed new friendships to be formed. Meanwhile, Thomas dodged the seasonal rain and enjoyed exploring our dedicated Forest School and Armstrong shared their passion for reading, with older children supporting those younger than themselves.
Faces alive with joy and energetic children making new friendships sums up the first house meeting of the Autumn term! Year 6 showed great promise, demonstrating skills of compassion and leadership.
The four house names form an important part of King’s St Alban’s history. Canon ARMSTRONG had the vision to establish the Prep school as we know it. BAILEY was a long-standing teacher of geography for over 30 years at King’s. Lester WILSON was the first headmaster of King’s St Alban’s and Wilfred THOMAS was headmaster of St Alban’s for over 20 years. On a daily basis we are surrounded by several memories of the past: the stain glass windows and the headmaster’s board in the chapel, the portrait of Canon Armstrong above the fireplace in the staff common room and the plaque dedicated to the longest serving headmaster stands proudly outside the library.
We wait with anticipation for our next House event which will be the poetry recitation competition in the John Moore Theatre towards the end of this half term. This will be followed by house rugby and hockey competitions and of course, the ever popular, termly house point round up! Later in the year we will continue to provide opportunities for King’s St Alban’s children to thrive outside the classroom with our house charity events.
