Immersive, spooky experience for Year 6 pupils
On Monday, the Foundation’s Year 6 pupils from King’s Hawford and King’s St Albans participated in Spooky Stories from Around the World, an event run by Mr Low, Head of English at King’s School Worcester, and his team.
The children were treated to some wonderful readings of spooky stories in Worcester Cathedral’s Undercroft. Lit up with eerie atmospheric lights and candles, spooky music added to the atmosphere, along with the fabulous costumes worn by the King’s School Worcester staff. All pupils listened attentively and loved all of the stories, each having their own favourite tale.
As part of their transition to the Senior School, the children were able to experience a lesson in an English classroom with Mr Low. The lesson focused on using words for impact and effect and developing ideas for a Gothic story. The pupils looked at examples of alliteration, personification, similes and metaphors before they took part in vocabulary races and found the best synonyms for words such as dark, scary, scream and gloomy! As part of this, they studied an extract from Frankenstein and acquitted themselves well, discussing the imagery in the text as well as why particular vocabulary had been used.
Mr Low was incredibly impressed with the Year 6 pupils and enjoyed getting to know them better. Back in the classroom at King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford, Year 6 have been creating their Gothic stories, which will be entered into a competition run by Mr Low, who will judge the entries. The top three entries will win a prize: good luck everyone!
Year 6 had a great morning; the children learnt a lot and enjoyed getting to know the Senior School English staff and finding their way around the English department. They also enjoyed the opportunity to have lunch with their peers. We thank Mr Low and his team for all their hard work.
