Year 5 Latinists Explore the Roots of Language
Mrs. Palmer’s Year 5 Latin group has had a fantastic week diving into the fascinating world of word etymology!
The children have been exploring the roots of words and discovering links to other languages, particularly French. This cross-linguistic exploration has not only broadened their understanding of Latin but also enhanced their appreciation for how languages are interconnected.
The group has found it especially rewarding to identify Latin origins in English words, helping them develop their everyday vocabulary in exciting new ways. These connections have sparked curiosity and made the lessons both educational and engaging.
In addition to etymology, the group has been working hard on translating short Latin passages.
This challenging yet fun activity has allowed them to put their growing vocabulary and grammar knowledge into practice. Each passage has been an opportunity to deepen their comprehension while developing their analytical and problem-solving skills.
It’s clear the children are embracing the joys of learning Latin, from its rich history to its influence on modern languages. Mrs. Palmer is thrilled with their progress and looks forward to seeing how their enthusiasm for the subject continues to grow. Fantastic work, Year 5 Latinists – keep up the brilliant effort!
