This much-loved occasion is a special moment in the King’s calendar, offering the opportunity to celebrate the achievements, commitment and spirit of the whole school community, while also bidding a fond farewell to our Upper Sixth leavers as they prepare to begin their next chapter. The congregation gathered in the magnificent surroundings of Worcester Cathedral for the King’s Day Service, which featured beautiful musical performances, including a well-received reprise of 'All That Jazz' from the school's award-winning production of Chicago, as well as thoughtful reflections from staff and the Heads of School. Together, they looked back on the many successes, milestones and memorable moments since September. During the service, Mr Charles spoke about the strength of our community and recalled just some of the incredible achievements from the last year. . Following the service, students passed through the doors of College Hall for one final time, where they were met by applause from staff and families, accompanied by the celebratory sound of the Worcester Cathedral bells ringing in their honour. These students have already made an outstanding contribution to school life, demonstrating commitment, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to support others. As they step into their new roles, they are looking forward to representing the pupil body, strengthening the sense of community across the School, helping every pupil feel encouraged to make the most of their time at King’s. Ava joined King’s St Alban’s in Year 4 before continuing her journey through the King’s Foundation. She is currently studying A-levels in Chemistry, Biology and Psychology, alongside an EPQ, and hopes to study Medicine at university after leaving school. An active and dedicated member of the King’s community, Ava has taken part in rowing and netball, having played netball since joining the school. She has also participated in Mandarin Club and volunteers weekly at The Lawns Care Home in Kempsey. Students had to present business plans to an impressive group of ‘dragons’, including OVs, Jimmy Graham (Os 06-17), founder and MD of Streamz, and Holly Dearn (W 11-18) from Danone. Jimmy and Holly were joined on the panel by John Roberts from NFU Mutual and Martin Sharples, founding director of Amazon. co. uk. Held at the magnificent Watersedge Leisure Facility, the event welcomed children from King's Hawford, King's St Albans and RGS The Grange. Competitors took on the exciting challenge of a 50m open-water swim in the lake before transitioning to a 1000m run around the adjacent field. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by children, parents and staff alike, creating a fantastic atmosphere of encouragement and support throughout the afternoon. For many of the competitors, it was their first experience of both open-water swimming and the aquathlon format. They embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, demonstrating outstanding determination, resilience and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones. Pupils travelled to the Black Mountains, enjoying some fine Welsh weather over the two night, three-day expedition along with Mr Ison, Mr Joyce, Mr Cuthbertson, Mr Jackson, Mrs Rutter and Mrs Kent. This trip built on their practice expedition to Dartmoor in April and was a chance for the pupils to apply the lessons they had learnt. All pupils attended a training day on 2nd July, where the contents of their bags were carefully scrutinised by their supervisors, and all possible excess weight shed. Routes were finalised by groups and team aims created, as diverse as creating a song to reflect the Countryside Code! The teams camped on two separate campsites over the two nights, with one being the Old Chapel, the school's Outdoor Activity Centre. This took many pupils back to their experiences camping whilst in the King’s prep schools. All teams navigated well and were self-sufficient on the expedition, carrying everything they needed for the three day expedition. The sun shone and all teams successfully completed the expedition, finishing at the scenic Llanthony Priory on Sunday evening. Pupils presented the findings of the expedition aim back at school and were congratulated on their achievement of passing their Expedition Section. King's Swimmers Secure County Title Three King's Worcester pupils were selected to represent Worcestershire at the prestigious Three Counties Swimming Gala, held at the 2022 Commonwealth Games pool at Sandwell Aquatics Centre on 5th July. Lower Years pupils Thea E, Harry C and Sam M were all selected by the Worcester County Swimming Association to compete against the strongest swimmers from Staffordshire and Gloucestershire. This annual gala brings together the fastest swimmers aged 10–16 from the three counties to compete in a range of individual events across Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Individual Medley, alongside the 4 x 50m Freestyle and Medley relay events. King's representation extended across the Foundation, with Bertie W from King's St. Alban's also earning county selection following his recent success at the IAPS National Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre. Unfortunately, Sam and Harry were both unable to compete due to injury and prior availability. However, Thea and Bertie produced outstanding performances, both recording personal best times in their individual events before playing key roles in Worcestershire's relay teams. The standard of competition was exceptionally high, with Worcestershire sitting in second place for much of the afternoon. Becky added, “It was really nice to revisit School to see how things are going and talk to my old teachers. It was also very encouraging to see that the Higgins talks are going strong (I think I was in U6 when Higgins Society was first set up). “My lecture was based on a 15,000 word dissertation I wrote for my undergrad course. This was in turn inspired by conversations I had with friends in first year about the nature of morality. ” Becky is finishing her degree in Philosophy and Theology at Oxford (Keble College) this year. She then plans to spend next year in China before starting a law course in Birmingham in 2027. The Higgins Lecture is a highlight of The Higgins Society’s calendar. It is the Sixth Form Academic Society at King’s, named after OV Alexander Higgins (1865-1935), Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge, President of the Institut de Droit International, and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. With the groups visiting during one of the hottest spells on record, the trip provided not only a valuable learning opportunity but also an excellent test of everyone's resilience in the heat! Goodrich Castle, one of the finest surviving medieval castles in England, offered pupils the chance to explore many of the features they have been studying in their history lessons. As they walked through the impressive gatehouse, climbed the towers and looked out across the surrounding countryside, they were able to see first-hand how castles were designed for both defence and awe. Suddenly, terms such as battlements, keeps and curtain walls felt more real than they ever could from the pages of a textbook. The pupils were a credit to the school throughout the trip. They asked thoughtful questions, engaged enthusiastically with the historical site and demonstrated excellent behaviour. We were particularly impressed by their curiosity and willingness to explore every corner of the castle, even when the temperature suggested that getting to the shop for an ice cream might have been a more attractive option. The visit helped bring classroom learning to life and provided everyone with a greater appreciation of how castles functioned as military strongholds, homes and symbols of power. Following the fortunes of hopeful young chorus girl, Peggy Sawyer, 42nd Street is a Broadway classic about the uplifting power of theatre - on and off the stage - and the passion and commitment needed to achieve any dream. Our young cast and crew certainly experienced that uplifting power of theatre on and off stage themselves. The whole process has been characterised with unfailingly supportive camaraderie that has seen raw talent elevate to a whole new level and newcomers surprise themselves with just what is possible! That has been particularly true in this last week as the exceptional red weather warning caused an unexpected hiatus. Our team reassembled this week and quickly got their heads back in the game to entertain their audiences. In the lead role of Peggy, Zara W shone with her powerhouse vocals and delicate characterisation of Peggy's wide-eyed innocent ambition. Alongside her, Georgia L gave a fantastically mature performance as jaded Broadway star, Dorothy Brock. Often only on stage together at times of crisis - and in this story there are plenty! - it was a particular treat to hear them duet on A Quarter To Nine just before the impressive titular finale. Great racing at Henley Women's and Marlow Regattas put the crews in good stead to compete for coveted places contested at the qualification races. The hot weather imposed a last minute change to timetabling of racing and our Friday evening events were delayed until Saturday morning. The three crews rowed superbly well, among the elite of junior rowing from across Great Britain and the globe, in the time trial format of qualifying races. Our Girls First Eight entry in the Prince Phillip Challenge Cup, were the first down the course and to wait for what seems hours to hear of the outcome; a great result but they fell a little short of the qualifying group. The Boys Quad Scull entry in the Fawley Challenge Cup raced third of our crews in an enormous field, endeavouring to secure one of only nine spots offered. Again it was a tremendous effort but they just missed the cut. The Boys First Eight entry into the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup had a magnificent run down the course, but had an excruciating wait for their results due to an Australian crew having a delayed start. The excitement reached new heights when it was time to create our eruptions! Donning their goggles and using a safe chemical reaction (using bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and food colouring), the children watched in amazement as their volcanoes bubbled, fizzed, and erupted. This hands-on investigation helped them understand how volcanic eruptions occur and allowed them to observe scientific changes in action. He kindly shared an overview of the work he and his wife had been doing: "I have now returned from a three year tour with the Church Mission Society to northern Uganda during which my wife, Rev Sarah, was Principal of the Archbishop Janani Luwum Theological College and I worked in the Diocese of Northern Uganda. In my role, I was developing a discipleship programme and working in the Community and Household Development Department, which involved amongst other things setting up a coffee plantation and nursery. In addition to this, I was also liaising with Ugandan government agencies to distribute half a million coffee seedlings alongside a training programme to artisanal farmers with the hope that, in time, they will considerably boost household incomes across the region, which is an area of significant deprivation and a post conflict zone. The boys consistently bowled excellent line and length, keeping the pressure on RGS throughout the innings while limiting the number of extras. The biggest highlight, however, was the fielding. Their energy and commitment to chase down every ball was superb. Leading the innings featuring two brilliant direct-hit run outs. It was fantastic to see all the hard work put into fielding practice paying off so spectacularly. RGS posted a competitive total, meaning the boys needed to bat with positive intent. To help everyone stay active while avoiding the hottest conditions, Games lessons were swapped for swimming sessions. Year 5 also found an inventive way to stay comfortable during their science lesson by placing their feet in trays of cool water while they worked. Having not returned to King’s since leaving, and in the UK for a holiday from their home in Melbourne, it was a particularly special visit for Nick to share with his family. They began at the Science Block, which Nick remembered very well having studied Chemistry and Physics for A-level. There, the whole family enjoyed seeing the labs and meeting with Dr Mark Poole (Hon OV) and his L6 Chemistry class. Due to the heat that day, all the L6 were in Games kit: Harry noted one was wearing a red top, while the others were in blue. The student shared that it was a KSWBC rowing top and he was heading to the Henley Qualifiers later that week, which resonated with Nick who himself had been a strong rower at King’s, and had represented the School at Henley! In the DT department, Nick’s sons were captivated by the school’s new 3D printers, guided by Julie Palmer (Hon OV) who was producing an item for a pupil’s coursework. Annie explained further, “Set in the stunning Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is the Isles of Scilly, this unique 42km multi-island trail race requires runners to circumnavigate four of the archipelago’s inhabited islands (St Agnes, Bryher, Tresco and St Martin’s) before a final 5km sprint on St Mary’s. “The real challenge lies in the cut-offs: because of the unique inter-island format and tidal deadlines, runners must beat the clock on every island to secure their place on the boats carrying us between stages or face a DNF ("Did Not Finish"). This psychological pressure, combined with the rugged, technical coastal trails and elevation, make the race a real test of endurance. The event also required us to be entirely self-sufficient with our fuelling and hydration across the entire 12 hours. “We were thrilled to all beat the boats and complete this one-of-a-kind challenge on our first attempts. As part of their Science learning, the children kept a daily weather diary, observing and recording the conditions throughout the week. They discussed the weather typically experienced during each season in the UK and were fascinated to track the unusually high temperatures we have been enjoying. The sunshine also provided the perfect opportunity to take learning outdoors. The children practised spelling the days of the week by painting them with water and paintbrushes on the playground, ordered the months of the year in the outdoor classroom and created colourful 'tricky word' fans to help reinforce their phonics learning. In English and Phonics, Year 1 made delicious-looking paper ice creams and used magic watercolour paintings to practise their split digraphs. They also used their senses to write descriptive pieces about the seaside, bringing their writing to life with imaginative vocabulary. They then tested their designs by seeing how many marbles each boat could hold before sinking. The children excitedly counted as marbles were added to each boat. It was interesting to compare the different designs and see how the shape of each boat affected its ability to float and carry weight. The children also enjoyed cooling off as they retrieved the sunken boats and marbles from the water. The most successful boat held 59 marbles before sinking. Working together, they solved missions, tried on the cadet vest and explored the equipment pack, learning about the essential items needed for different situations. One of the highlights was the camouflage challenge, where the children had to spot 21 hidden items without being seen themselves. They also took part in an exciting mission to collect hidden objects while remaining undetected, putting their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills to the test. It was the final opportunity to secure those last qualifying places for Hickstead in August and for our Year 6 riders it was also their final chance to represent King's Hawford before moving on to Big Kings in September. With temperatures soaring throughout the day, it was certainly a scorcher, but our riders and ponies rose brilliantly to the challenge. First to compete was Isla W riding Tasha in the 40cm class. The pair produced a lovely clear round to finish in 8th place. Isla also took on the 50cm class, but in the huge arena and challenging heat, Tasha was feeling a little cheeky and picked up two stops. Despite this, Isla rode with great determination and completed her round with a smile. Next up were Iona and Dinky in the 60cm class. Iona piloted Dinky around a beautiful clear round, finishing comfortably within a very competitive class. A fantastic effort from both pony and rider. The team had earned their place at the prestigious event, held on Sunday at RAF Wittering, after competing in the regional round in February, joining the top three schools from each UK region for a challenging day of competition. The 14-strong team took part in a wide range of activities designed to test key areas of the RAF CCF syllabus, including shooting, cyber, space, leadership, first aid and drill. The cadets demonstrated excellent teamwork, problem-solving and composure throughout the day, securing second place in the Cyber competition and fourth place in both Drill and Leadership. The Cyber challenge saw cadets tackle an escape-room-style task, solving puzzles, coding and decrypting text to unlock a series of padlocks. They demonstrated the superb skills they have been developing throughout the term within their chosen events and disciplines and, once again, showed exactly why Hawford continues to punch well above its weight when competing against some of the largest and strongest preparatory schools in the country. It proved to be an incredibly successful day, culminating in three members of the Hawford squad achieving qualification to the National Finals in four different events. There were plenty of well-executed boundaries throughout the innings, with James, Gabe, Wilf and Magson all finding the rope with some excellent shots. The standout batting performance came from Archie M, who was in terrific form. During his three-over spell at the crease, Archie struck two huge sixes and two well-timed fours, helping KSA build an impressive total. Thanks to a combination of strong batting, positive running and excellent teamwork, KSA finished on a fantastic score of 291. KSA then carried their momentum into the field, making a strong start with the ball. Heavy rains upstream in the Severn catchment area meant that we were greeted by an unseasonably fast-flowing river. Unfortunately, we had to withdraw our Lower Remove single sculls due to the conditions. Larger combinations and our other crews overcame many of the challenges and difficulties with aligning race starts and excessively long delays on the river. It was a credit to all our rowers how they calmly went about their racing in the adverse conditions as marshals and organisers struggled with the consequences of the river. The racing was fast and furious with most of our crews winning at least one of their rounds, gathering points to decide the final and winners. Having lost the toss, we were asked to bowl first and responded brilliantly. As a team, the boys bowled superbly, consistently hitting a good line and length while keeping the ball straight. Their accuracy made scoring difficult and helped restrict The Downs throughout much of the innings. The Downs did, however, have one outstanding striker of the ball who played a superb innings, scoring an impressive 31 runs from his two overs at the crease. Our bowlers were clever in trying different tactics to prevent him from targeting the leg-side boundary, but despite their efforts he still managed to clear the ropes on several occasions. Chasing a challenging target, our batting once again showed encouraging signs of development. There were some excellent shots played, including several well-struck boundaries, and it was particularly pleasing to see the continued improvement in running between the wickets. The boys are communicating better, making smarter decisions, and showing greater confidence with every game. Before Christmas, the Boat Club raised more than £6,500 through its Million Metre Row, while the Maths Society contributed a further £1,700 from its Vegas Evening earlier this year. The funds raised will help support people living with motor neurone disease, campaign for better care and fund ground-breaking research. The Motor Neurone Disease Association is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland focused on MND care, research and campaigning. It has more than 1,300 active volunteers and around 300 paid staff dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by the disease. Motor neurone disease is a life-shortening neurological condition that affects the nerves controlling movement. It causes progressive muscle weakness, which can affect how a person walks, talks, eats, drinks and breathes. The MCC batted first. Flo B bowled incredibly well for King’s, taking a wicket, with Katie H and Eshal R each taking two wickets and Daisy B taking a brilliant catch. We then delivered an equally impressive batting performance despite the changeable weather conditions, with Bryony G retiring on 62, Effie S-T reaching 47 and Issie F at 28. After an afternoon of entertaining play, the final stages came to a thrilling end. With the teams tied with only one over remaining, Issie F hit a beautiful boundary on the first ball of the final over. This gave King’s the win by three wickets with just five balls left of the match. Congratulations to Effie S-T, who was awarded the Spirit of Cricket Award by the MCC for her impressive skill and sportsmanship. Pupils have immersed themselves in African culture through African dance sessions with Mrs Lewis, a drumming workshop, and lessons exploring the geography, traditions, and diversity of different African countries. A particular highlight was a visit to the KSW Art Department, where pupils worked with Mrs Hewitt to create their own vibrant African masks. In French lessons, they discovered the many African countries where French is spoken as a first language, broadening their understanding of the continent's rich linguistic heritage. The week's celebrations extended to lunchtime, with a selection of African-themed dishes on offer. We were delighted to see everyone enthusiastically trying new foods, and the South African Bunny Chow proved especially popular on Wednesday! One of the most memorable experiences of the week was a visit from local artist Marie Therese King. Pupils from Reception to Year 2 took part in a Batik workshop, collaborating to create a beautiful piece of artwork that will serve as a lasting reminder of this special week. Tuesday 2nd June U9/8 Cricket v Winterfold The weather was far from kind on Tuesday afternoon, with a heavy downpour arriving just before the start of our match against Winterfold. The rain made conditions extremely challenging, with the wet surface causing the ball to skid through and making timing the ball particularly difficult for the batters. KSA won the toss and batted first. Despite the tricky conditions, there were some positive contributions with the bat. Charlie led the way with an excellent six and a four, while Hugo also found the boundary with a well-struck six. However, it was not our day with the bat overall, and we finished our innings on 229. Knowing we needed a strong performance in the field, the team responded brilliantly with the ball. Our bowlers worked hard to keep us in the game throughout the innings. Theo, Hugo and Gabe each claimed a wicket, helping to restrict the Winterfold batting line-up and ensuring the contest remained competitive. The children performed on a wide variety of instruments across a broad range of grades from the very first 'Prep Test’, (where the examiner writes immediate constructive feedback and issues the certificate at the end of the exam), on to Initial Grade - a stepping stone to Grade 1, and through to Grade 4 in this exam sitting. The first group, 5SH, travelled to the Malvern Hills where they put their geography skills into action by using OS maps, compasses, and both four- and six-figure grid references to navigate their route. Despite the threat of rain, the class completed the challenge successfully and returned to school full of enthusiasm. Back at school, 5SH took on the added challenge of cooking Super Noodles on Trangia stoves, before ending the evening by toasting marshmallows over the fire and camping overnight in tents. The following week, 5CK rose to the occasion on their own Malvern Hills field trip, showing excellent navigational skills and determination in wet weather. Their storm shelters were tested in real conditions and proved very useful at lunchtime. After returning to school, they also cooked outdoors, toasted marshmallows, and successfully spent the night under canvas. More than 60 children from Years 2–6 took to the stage to share their performances to parents and celebrate the hard work and dedication that has gone into their preparations. Our children have worked exceptionally hard in the lead up to their examinations, and what an exciting atmosphere it has created. Countless hours have been spent rehearsing lines, refining performances, developing expression, and building confidence, all leading to these memorable moments. Their dedication and commitment have been clear to see throughout the process, and it was fantastic to watch that effort come to life on stage. The showcases were filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a real sense of pride as pupils stepped into the spotlight. From our youngest performers in Year 2 to our more experienced Year 6 children, each one brought enthusiasm, determination, and individuality to their performance. Standing in front of an audience and performing takes tremendous courage. It requires children to step outside of their comfort zones, trust in their preparation, express emotions with confidence, and put themselves in a position where all eyes are on them.
