Lower Sixth Sam is awarded the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship
We are extremely proud of Lower Sixth Student Sam W (L6, Cl), who received an Arkwright Engineering scholarship this year.
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire pupils to pursue their dreams and change the world as a future leader in engineering. The Scholarships are awarded to hard-working 16-year-old pupils through a rigorous selection process, supporting them through their A levels. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is a programme from the national STEM education charity, The Smallpeice Trust, which has provided pupils scholarships since 1991.
Once again, the school’s Design and Technology department has showcased their talents with another student receiving an Arkwright Scholarship. Mr Wilson, Head of DT, said ‘We’re delighted for Sam. Achieving this scholarship is a recognition of his strengths and a reward for the interest he has in the field of engineering and beyond.
Sam attended an award ceremony at the Institute of Engineering and Technology in Savoy Place, London where he was awarded his certificate. The event, in the form of a graduation ceremony, involved really inspirational talks by leaders in the global engineering world and it provided an opportunity for scholarship winners to meet their industry mentors who will help support and introduce industry opportunities during the next two years.
Sam said ” “I am truly overjoyed to receive the Arkwright Scholarship; It feels like all my hard work has paid off” Sam also went on to thank Mr Lummas and Mr Wilson in the DT department for their support and encouraged any students interested in the diverse field of engineering to apply.
A commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor sponsor every Scholarship. This means that support is offered in various different ways; for example, it might be valuable hands-on work experience, support for a curriculum project or a personal mentor who can help with aspects of the pupils’ studies and career planning.
Sam has been sponsored by Collins Aerospace and is really looking forward to the opportunities presented to him.
The scholarships include financial help, mentoring and exclusive events. Sam and Joseph will receive £600 to use to support the purchase of components and materials to complete personal technical projects or enhance curriculum projects. The money can also be used to purchase textbooks, and reference books, or to fund attendance on technical courses, summer courses or open days. Scholars have access to a wide variety of exclusive events run by partner companies, universities and trade associations, including Connect Days and Summer Schools. These events give Scholars a real insight into different sectors of industry and academia.
Congratulations to Sam!
