Many OVs will have taken part in expeditions led by Hon OV John Walton over the years. He has now published a book – Peaks and Troughs, the Up and Down Experiences of a Veteran Trekker – compiling some of the most interesting stories from his years of travel. The proceeds are to be shared equally between The Himalayan Trust UK and the King’s Worcester Bursary Fund.
John says, “Teaching in the environment of King’s allowed me to turn a dream into reality, gave me the confidence to extend my horizons around the globe and to take pupils with me on a thrilling journey of adventure. From that one dream, I have so many memories, many of which are found within the pages of this book.
“As I recount the stories, I realise just how bizarre some of them have been, from chess set sellers in Kathmandu to retrieving a lost passport in India, from enjoying the success of reaching a summit to the utter disappointment of having to retreat.
“Without the support of King’s, I would never have been able to fulfil that one dream, so it is important to me that some of the proceeds from this book go towards allowing young people to pursue their own dreams. The other great influence on me throughout my travels has been the desire to give something to the communities with whom we came into contact, not least the Himalayan Trust UK and their work in education and health with remote mountain communities. It is right and fitting that they too should benefit from this book.”
John’s book is available to buy from Amazon or Waterstones and we can’t wait to read it!
