OV’s Music Memories

We were overjoyed to be in receipt of a beautifully bound ‘Marks Choral Collection’ from OV Clive Marks (S 69-74). The collection is seen here being presented to King’s Director of Music, Simon Taranczuk (Hon OV) by Liz Elliott, King’s Development Director, on behalf of Clive.

Although a dentist by day, Clive has had a lifelong love of music and performing with a number of amateur choirs, with an array of different experiences. Clive had to retire from singing two years ago and he has made good use of the intervening months by compiling this Compendium (Volume 1) – detailed notes to accompany the collection of Choral scores, which he will be donating to King’s School Music Department later this month.

Clive has taken great care to go through his musical records, noting where and when each piece was performed as well as some interesting details about the performances, including the Grammy Award winning choral recording of Walton’s ‘Belshazzar’s Feast’. As King’s Director of Music, Simon remarked: “The list of conductors Clive has performed with is a Who’s Who of 20th century greats!” It is a particular pleasure to see the collection begin with concerts Clive took part in while at King’s.

Another great example of Clive’s musical career is a performance of Carmina Burana at the BBC Proms in 1994. The singers are a combined force of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus (BSC), the London Symphony Chorus and the Wayneflete Singers, all of whom Clive was singing with at the time. Another OV, Peter Leete (Ca 59-66), who sings with the BSC, also took part in this performance.

Our heartfelt thanks for the time Clive has given to collate such an incredible collection, which will bring the choral scores to life for all who read it at King’s Worcester.
