Poetry Masterclass Means Love is in the Air
This week, Year Five pupils took part in a poetry master class with Mr Low, Head of English at King’s Worcester. They started the session off by looking at a number of poetic terms and trying to match these to their definitions. The children did very well and showed off their excellent English skills. During this initial part of the masterclass, a number of interesting conversations took place. It was brilliant to see all of our pupils eager to take part in the discussions and share their thoughts.
Next up, pupils studied the poem Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy. As some of you might know, her Valentine is not your usual romantic message of love, hearts, chocolates and champagne. It is an extended metaphor comparing love to an onion! The children really enjoyed the unusual poem and worked hard during the poetry masterclass to analyse and understand it. They looked at its structure and were able to highlight the various forms of figurative language.
At the end of the session, pupils were given the challenge to write their own valentine about something they love. Children are now busy writing about their love of football, puppies, friends, horse-riding and much more. The finished poems will be delivered to King’s Senior and we look forward to seeing who Mr Low and his team choose to receive prizes.
This week’s poetry masterclass is part of a wider programme of transition events that take place throughout the Prep years at King’s Hawford. These sessions are designed to ease the transition into the Senior School at the start of Year Seven. Pupils are given the chance to get to know members of staff from the Senior School and learn about the expectations these teachers hold. It also adds another element to our pupils’ learning, as they are delivered a lesson from a subject specialist.
We look forward to receiving an update after the half-term break.
