With the last Sports Day being held in 2018 it meant that this was the first Sports Day for many of our pupils. You could sense the excitement and slight nervousness amongst the children (and staff) as the children were buzzing with questions in the morning about their different events. Having all fingers and toes crossed for the weather, paid off and the sun shone for us.
With an exemplary team of staff, the event got off to an exciting start with the sprint races. All the races were a showcase of the top athletes across the years as well as an opportunity for the children to enjoy competing to earn points for their Houses. It was amazing to have the technology which allowed us to have photo finishes in the very tight races. There were some top performances in all the races with three school records being broken:
Year 6 Girls’ 600m: Anna S
Year 5 Boys’ 600m: Jack T
Year 6 Girls’ 200m: Florence V
Tribute to all the children for their enthusiasm to compete in as many events as they could. When it came to the sack races we usually only let those without stickers compete. However, Mrs Clark, could not say no and nearly all the children had a go. This was then followed by the staff sack race which is still awaiting a steward’s enquiry due to Mr Chapman’s lane violation and diving for the line.
What a fantastic day, there was laughter, there were tears, and there was a lot of running, but, in the end, Sports Day 2021 will be remembered as a day of tense competition and resilience as the children returned to competitive event with the parents watching. Near normality!
