Return of a Welsh Wonder
At the start of term we were delighted to welcome back OV Geraint Nicholas (Ca 76-81) for a look around both King’s and King’s St Alban’s.
As was the norm when he was at school, Geraint boarded in King’s St Alban’s while he was in the Lower and Upper Fourth. He enjoyed looking around what is now the Prep School, rediscovering his old dorms, and chatting to many of the King’s St Alban’s teachers, including Headmaster Richard Chapman (Hon OV), about how the school used to look. In particular, Geraint noticed how the swimming pool had gained a roof, remembering how cold the pool used to be, even in the summer!
Geraint was very interested in the sports at King’s. He was a keen Rugby player throughout his time at King’s and, as a senior player, he took charge of many of the budding Rugby players (especially when they needed to get into shape for the House Rugby matches!). He was very impressed by both the Michael Baker Boathouse and the Keyes Building and was pleased about the ever-growing opportunities within sport at the Senior School.
While so much had changed, Geraint remarked on how places like College Hall and Castle House, now the Music School, still felt the same, and how even the smallest things, such as the view out onto College Green or the stage in what was the old Library, were so familiar from his time at the School.
Geraint had fond memories of his time at King’s, which was clearly reflected in his stories of his teachers, his schoolfriends and the School itself.
It was our pleasure to show Geraint, or ‘Taff’ as he was known at School, around, and we look forward to seeing him again soon.
