King’s St. Alban’s pupils were treated to a visit last Thursday of Robin Stevens, author of the bestselling ‘Murder Most Unladylike’ series. Against the atmospheric backdrop of Worcester Cathedral, Robin told us of her enduring love of the murder mystery, while reflecting on why this genre proves such a sure-fire hit with readers. Author and audience seemed agreed as to the formula for its success: the natural curiosity of the reader, coupled with an urge to solve puzzles while relishing the drama of a murder mystery from the safety of a fiction book. She talked about her critically acclaimed books with real energy and affection, highlighting her eighth novel in the series, Top Marks for Murder. The children were even invited to (successfully) solve a murder for themselves. Book buyings and signings followed. The excitement was palpable, as many happy children returned to school clutching their newly purchased volumes.
