Sport Report Autumn Term Week 6

U8 Rugby Festival at Hawford

On Tuesday, the U8 rugby team enjoyed another fantastic festival. This week it was Hawford’s turn to host, and it was great to welcome teams from King’s St Alban’s, RGS The Grange, RGS Springfield and Winterfold for a super afternoon of rugby in the sunshine. Our boys played as part of a triangular fixture with RGS The Grange and Winterfold, and demonstrated outstanding progress in both games, putting into practice their hard work with developing the use of space in attack and passing the ball as a team. The boys played with dedication, skill and an improved game-awareness, and were able to score several impressive tries. We were especially impressed with the decision-making of Rupert, who was awarded Player of the Match. There has been excellent progress made across this half-term and we look forward to continuing this in the next tag-rugby festival after the half-term break.

U10 Rugby vs Winterfold

The U10 boys put in another strong performance this week against Winterfold. Powerful running from earlier in the term has continued, but it is now reinforced by some excellent support play, which saw the team run in a number of fluid tries.

The team showed that they are progressing strongly with their press defence, and they were able to put the opposition under increasing pressure.

With his direct running, James B was again outstanding, but this was very much a team performance of which to be proud.

U10/U11 Rugby vs Winterfold

On Wednesday afternoon, a team of mixed U10 and U11 players hosted Winterfold in an exciting and competitive touch-rugby fixture. Our opponents had requested that the game be played in this format, and it was fantastic to see how well the boys adapted, both in attack and defence. Touch-rugby relies on a sound understanding of the use of space in attack as well as strong ball skills and decision-making in possession. The Hawford boys battled hard as a team and were able to score well-crafted tries regularly . Noah L was a constant threat to the opponents’ try-line with his jinking runs.

Match Report from Jess K (Y5)

“It was a warm but promising afternoon when the Years Five and Six girls set out to the RGS Worcester hockey pitches. It was a fantastic team performance, and everyone put in 110% effort.

Lyra H performed some outstanding hits in defence to protect our goal. Thea E, Olivia W and Pip K scored three fantastic goals, with solid performances from Sophie W, Chloe S and Jess K.

A big “well done” goes to the whole team; we played our very best today.”

U10 vs RGS Springfield

Match Report from Pip K (Y5)

This really was a game of two halves! In the first half, the teams were evenly matched at the start, but Springfield took the lead after one of their attackers worked their way behind the King’s defenders. With no goalkeepers on the pitch, the first goal was an easy tap-in for the home side. The Hawford team seemed to get a little deflated after this, and Springfield played the ball through again, but Lyra H made a vital interception to prevent a second goal. Springfield then had a couple more chances to extend their lead, but failed to convert these into goals.

During the half-time interval, Hawford regrouped and reorganised. The second half was all King’s: Hawford equalised early through Pip K, who picked up the ball and drove towards the goal before slotting the ball in the corner. The second goal came from quick passing: Thea E took a side-line hit, finding Pip K, whose first-time pass to Olivia W was put away to take the lead. King’s then sealed victory when Thea E found the backboards after picking the ball up on the left and dribbling past the RGS Defence.

At the end of the game, the teams showed their appreciation for the other side with the traditional “hip-hip-hooray”. Thea E was nominated Girl of the Game by Springfield. Well done to the whole team.
