The second half of the Autumn Term kicked off with some outstanding action on our playing fields.
U11A Rugby v Hawford and Hymers
Despite the two-week break, the boys were quickly back into the rugby groove as we enjoyed a tough tournament with King’s Hawford and the touring Hymer’s School. The first game played at St Alban’s extensive playing fields was against Hawford; it is always a pleasure for the teams to enjoy friendly competition with boys they will be at school with next year. The game ebbed and flowed and at times it seemed that tacking was optional! Some good line-breaks from Guy and Tommy led to some super tries and a key interception from the lively Eddie kept it close. In the end, we went down by seven tries to five in a committed and pleasing performance. The Hymer’s game was equally tight, with the tourists playing an aggressive defensive game with no quarter asked or given! The boys improved line speed but struggled to get passes in and ended up relying too much on the opponents’ errors or individual brilliance. Tommy showed just this with a brilliant length of the pitch try at the end but Hymer’s edged out the winners of this close encounter by three tries to two. This was an excellent afternoon against two quality sides!
U11B Rugby v Hawford and Hymers
It was great to see the boys straight back into competitive rugby after a two-week half term. The U11Bs played in a mini tournament against King’s Hawford and Hymers School, hosted at Slingpool. We started slowly but this has to be expected after a long break with no rugby being played. Patrick, Sebastian and George ran hard with ball in hand and showed good off-loading to create a number of tries in both games. We were very impressed with the strong tackling and determination from Henry G and Oliver K-D. The try of the day was a splendid bit of play where Henry G ran past two opponents by a quick change of pace and direction; he then off-loaded to Patrick, who ran in to score. The boys’ performances improved throughout the afternoon and they all enjoyed getting stuck in and playing against two strong teams. Well done.
It was great to see how confident the girls were at dribbling the ball and we saw some well-timed tackles. We now need to encourage them to get their heads up and pass the ball – a promising season ahead!
U11 Netball v Hymers College and King’s Hawford
The girls really enjoyed their first netball match in 18 months. They played a round robin against King’s Hawford and Hymers College who were a touring team from Hull. It was really lovely to see the whole year group out playing lots of netball. There was some good passing and movement around the court and many goals being scored. This will certainly stand them in good stead for the coming netball term. Well done girls, you all played well and were polite towards the opposition.
