Supporting the 7s

Sunday 6th March 2022 saw the return of the Rugby Sevens season with the King’s Worcester 1st VII competing in the highly prestigious North of England Sevens Tournament. The team went on to win the prestigious Boodle & Dunthorne Salver Cup, despite being plagued by injury. It was fantastic to have support from OVs Jack Cope (W 15-20) and Charlie Francis (K 13-20 and King’s St Alban’s), themselves both previous King’s 1st VII and 1st XV players.

Jack said, “It was a pleasure to watch the boys play and even better to come away with some silverware.

“Jonny Mason (Hon OV) and Simon Greenall had clearly drilled the boys brilliantly; having everyone on the same page and knowing their roles really played into the boys’ favour. It was also brilliant to see Alex T and Josh R still performing at the top level, players who Charlie and myself have played with before and know well.”

Charlie added, “It was great to watch the 1st team play and to see Jonny and Simon, up in our new home of Liverpool. The North of England 7s tournament in which they competed was our last ever tournament for King’s as our 7s season was cut short due to COVID, so it brought back good memories.

“It was especially good to see boys such as Josh R and Alex T, who played for our year group when we were in the Upper Sixth.

“This week, Jack and I played for Liverpool 1st team rugby in the Christie cup, involving the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, in a squad which also included OV Owen Preston (Cr 14-21 and King’s Hawford) for Leeds. Unfortunately we didn’t get a photo but was great to play against a former team mate and OV.”

It’s great to see rugby remains an important part of OVs’ lives.
