King's St Alban's

6 October

Supporting World Food Day.

With World Food Day 2022 just around the corner, taking place on Sunday 16th October, one of King’s St Alban’s Year 6 classes took the opportunity to share their thoughts and plans with the rest of the Prep School in their assembly.

Speaking passionately and with great knowledge and understanding, the 6B pupils engaged their audience by asking the questions, ‘What is food?’ and ‘Why do we need food’. Plenty of hands shot up in the air as everyone wanted to answer these two key subjects for discussion. Understanding what food is and why we need it, Year 6 encouraged the audience to discuss the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations’ motto for World Food Day 2022: “Leave no one behind.” The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has made tremendous progress in building a better world, however there are still many people who have been left behind. In reality, millions of people from around the world are unable to afford a healthy diet, which in turn puts them at high risk of malnutrition. Whilst across the world there is enough food to feed everyone, the problem is access and availability of nutritious food in certain areas. This has not been helped by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, inequality and international tensions.

The pupils eloquently shared some frightening facts and figures about global food shortages and some of the reasons why this has been historically and continues to be the case. The assembly concluded with a discussion surrounding what we can do to help with ideas including shop local, not wasting food, eating a diverse range of foods and eating seasonal foods. As a school, King’s St Alban’s will be supporting Project Gambia with a delicious cake sale on Friday.

It is clear from the level of detail and passion that emerged from this assembly that the children had researched the topic thoroughly.
