Tenacious tackles: A week on the sports field.

RGS The Grange U8 Mini Hockey Festival

What a fantastic afternoon of hockey! The U8 girls all got stuck in and played their hearts out. Both teams did very well and scored many goals through the afternoon. They played seven games in total and were exhausted by the end but really battled up until the final whistle. Particular mention to Marnie, Yifei, Ariya and Zara for their tenacious tackles and managing to win six and draw one throughout the afternoon!

U10 v RGS Springfield

The U10’s had a hard game on a small astro on Wednesday. Finding the small area difficult to adjust to, play started a little scrappy, with them getting each other’s way. As the game progressed, they adapted well and started to pass the ball around a little more. I lost track of the number of shots that Eshal had on goal that were stopped on the line by the opposing team. Ella impressed by running around tirelessly making tackles and winning the ball back from all areas on the pitch. All round a good performance which highlighted the areas we need to work on.

U8/9 Rugby Festival at RGS The Grange

We headed over to RGS The Grange for our third tag tournament of the year, keen to put the lessons learned in training into practice. Three very competitive games showed that we have indeed made some good progress this term. In attack, Will and Ben exhibited some good footwork in the early games and Archie and Mark showed good pace. As the afternoon progressed, we worked on our passing game and showed some glimpses of good work in this area, with Wilf and James looking to put others into space. One try saw the ball passing through a number of pairs of hands before we dotted down in the corner. Our defence has also come on, with Tommy taking a particular role in organising the line. All in all, another very enjoyable afternoon.

U10/11 Rugby v RGS Springfield

The Year 5/6 rugby against RGS Springfield began very well matched, with both teams showing good strength on and off the ball. Harry B, Peter U and Patrick F all demonstrated some brilliant direct carries and superb defensive efforts. The first half was very equally matched, going into the break two tries a piece. Both our tries came from lovely individual skill and a strong counter attack. In the second half the KSA boys pulled together and started creating good shape to break down the defence. We also kept well organised when defending. As the match went on, we started showing our quality and bringing in some great two-on-one moves. This really impressed the coaches as we have been focusing on this in our recent games lessons and clubs. Well played to all players involved on both teams; it was a great day of rugby.

U10/11 Rugby v RGS Springfield

On a lovely Wednesday afternoon down at the Slingpool Fields, a mix of Year 5 and 6 boys came across an eager and excited RGS Springfield team. It was treated very much as a training/coaching game, where both sets of boys improved their organisation, tackling and running with the ball. Henry G continued to impress with his willingness to get stuck in and make some well-timed, well executed tackles. Jack T and Alex S both scored some brilliant solo tries, where they went past a number of opponents with a good step and a quick change of direction. George H offered to help the RGS Springfield team to even out the numbers and make sure everyone played as much rugby as possible. George was a real handful for our defence and scored numerous times when running through defensive gaps. It was great to see the progression the boys are making from week to week.

U11 Hockey v RGS Springfield
The girls had a great afternoon at RGS Springfield. They played on a smaller Astro than usual but they adapted quickly. Izzy had a few shots on target and converted one in the second half. It was clear that our defending had improved, and many balls were being knocked out of the D, but RGS Springfield were the stronger team and won by a few goals. There are lots of skills to work on for the upcoming matches. The afternoon was topped off by an apple juice and a flapjack.
