The Canal and River Boat Trust visits us!

This week, some Year 4 and Year 6 children took part in an engaging workshop to explore the mechanics of canal locks, thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers from Diglis. The session began with a video explaining how canal locks operate, setting the stage for a hands-on activity that saw students working in small groups.

The Year 4 children kicked off the workshop by assisting volunteer Val in constructing a model of a Victorian lock, drawing connections to their previous visit to the Diglis Fish Pass in Year 2. Year 6 followed with the same activity but tackled the added challenge of following detailed instructions to complete the model independently.

The interactive experience was made possible by the Diglis volunteers—Val, Andy, and Keith—who handcrafted the model pieces in the Diglis workshop. The volunteers were full of praise for the students, highlighting their excellent manners and enthusiasm for the project.

This memorable session not only deepened the students’ understanding of canal history and engineering but also showcased the power of community collaboration in education.
