Top Tips and Scullers Success

Top Tips

Our most recent Oxbridge OVs, Ed Ashton (Cl 10-17), Edd Peckston (K 10-17), Amalie Coleman (S 10-17), Becky Hartley (Br 10-17), Dom Cronie (Br 15-17), Iona Davies (W 10-17) and  Saskia Frisby (Ca 12-17) came back to school this Wednesday to talk with the current Oxbridge applicants and give them some top tips about their interviews coming up.

The OVs then joined Matthew Armstrong, Headmaster, Duncan King, Academic Deputy and Liz Elliott and Sophie Borrillo-McLellan, from our Development and Alumni team, to talk about some of their experiences during their first term at Oxford and Cambridge. Saskia talked about how incredible it had been to hold a human brain in her hands which had held “every memory, every thought and someone’s whole being”, whilst Dom was really looking forward to working with liquid nitrogen in his third year!  Edd and Amelie were both amused that their language courses included watching silent movies, as well as a lot of translation exercises.  Settling in to life at Oxford and Cambridge came up in conversation, including the support – both academic and pastoral – provided by the tutors, and formal dinners in College.  It sounds like the OVs are looking forward to a little rest over the holidays, albeit with plenty of work to do in preparation for next term.  They obviously really enjoyed meeting Mr Armstrong and Mr King and also exchanging stories amongst each other.

One of our returning Oxbridge students Edd Peckston (K10-17) even had the opportunity to speak at the Oxford Union. He gave a floor speech on a debate on the European Union where the motion was ‘This House believes that the fall of the EU is upon us’.

Treading the boards

Our drama students had a treat this week as members of the cast of this year’s Swan Theatre pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’ came to support and encourage them at the dress rehearsal for the school production of ‘South Pacific’. OVs Ben Humphrey (Cr 93-04), Oliver Brooks (S 96-01) and Tom Riddell (Cr 02-09) are among the cast this year and the students were delighted to get some top acting tips from the pros themselves!

Rowing with Style

We were delighted to hear that Alex Styles (W 08-15) won the Senior Lightweight woman’s single at Scullers Head last weekend. She was the 6th fastest overall woman, even beating GB athletes.  Well done Alex on your fantastic achievement.
