Under 8s Rugby Impress at Winterfold, Under 11s Shine vs St Alban’s

Under 8 Rugby –  Winterfold Festival

Tuesday saw our Under 8 rugby side play their first competitive rugby games for King’s Hawford and it was well worth the wait.  The team played three very competitive games against the opposition who were, equally, putting the skills that they had acquired into action for the the first time.  The first of two games against opposition from The Grange, saw King’s Hawford take an early lead with some decisive attacks.  RGS fought back well but some excellent tagging by the whole side, especially William C and Billy K kept them at bay.  Our boys found gaps well, with Frank M making a number of incisive runs to touch down over the line. The second match against Winterfold and the third against The Grange’s second side ebbed and flowed with some great rugby played all around. Both games were tight but Hawford had the attacking edge with Alexander S-C, Frank M and Billy K linking particularly well. This was a fantastic debut for the boys who deserve to be hugely proud of their achievements on the day.

Under 11 v King’s St Alban’s

Our under-11 boys thoroughly enjoyed hosting boys from Year 5 and 6 from St Alban’s this week.  After a joint training session, covering handling skills, decision making and a little bit of rucking, the two Year 6 sides chose ends and a gladiatorial match got underway.  Hawford took a strong early lead with some fine direct running by Ben B, George C and Barnaby J, whilst Jude R was a whisp-like attacking force, evading the grasps of the opposition’s defence.  Encouraged to punch holes in the Hawford defensive wall, the St Alban’s side began to find their rhythm and began to find more space, running in some excellent tries.  Hawford’s tackling was excellent throughout the game, however, and played some strong handling rugby that broke down the opposition.  It was great to see boys from both some playing with and against each other, enjoying their rugby and taking some very positive strides forward in developing their skillset.
