West End comes to Pre-Prep for World Book Week

This week in Pre-Prep we have been having a great time celebrating World Book Week.  We have been listening to stories, sharing our favourite books and creating new characters and settings of our own. The children have been taking photos of themselves (probably with the help of a few mummies and daddies) reading in the most unusual places, including on the top of a car, on the trampoline and in the bath! We had some fantastic book bingo entries and it was lovely to see the variety of books that the children found.

On Friday, to round off our book themed week, we had a visit from drama workshop company, West End in Schools, to do book-based workshops with the Pre-Prep children.

Year Two enjoyed their workshop based on the traditional story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. They started by retelling the story together with actions. As the story went on they created their own freeze frames and looked at ways to ‘get into character.’ They thought about the different vocabulary they could use to describe the characters and how they can use their bodies and facial expressions to portray the characters. They finished with some partner work, thinking about what might happen after the story had finished and the rest of the class had to guess what their storyline was from their freeze frame.

Year One and Reception focused on the story of ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson. They had great fun listening to the story and adding appropriate actions. They looked at how they could use their bodies to move like the different characters from the story, including the nut! The children thought about the different movements they could make to become the fox, snake, mouse, owl and of course, the scary Gruffalo himslef!

All of the children had a fantastic morning.  There are definitely have some aspiring thespians amongst them!
