Year 2 Think Tank!

On Tuesday, the pupils in Year 2 at King’s Hawford enjoyed a trip to the Think Tank Museum in Birmingham. After the short trip up the motorway to Birmingham city centre, the children discovered a world of science, enabled to do so in a fun-filled, interactive way by the Science Museum.

Whilst there are numerous aspects of science to be explored at Think Tank, our visit kick-started our new and exciting topic on “Explorers”.  The topic will see the children extend their learning far beyond the museum into space, learning back in the classroom about significant events such as the moon landing.  Upon arrival at the museum, the cohort excitedly bounced into the planetarium, where they looked up and learnt about the stars in the night sky, listened attentively to stories about the constellations and discovered the planets in our solar system.

Following our planetarium experience, the children explored the ground floor of the museum, which focusses on transport from the past. It was then back to our topic, with the children making their way to Space School. During the course of this workshop, the children learnt about what an astronaut needs to survive in space, how we reach space in a rocket and what it might take for us to live on Mars in the future. The children were simply amazed by what they found out.

After a spot of lunch, it was time to relax by playing in the huge Mini Brum soft play, pretending to be hairdressers, builders and paramedics, to name just a few possible professions! A highlight for the children was the long bendy yellow slide! Finally, before heading back, we visited the Science Garden outside in the sunshine. It was a lovely day, which we’re sure has enthused the children to learn more about their topic back at school.
