Year 3 trip to Lower Smite Farm

On Wednesday, Year 3 had a fantastic time at Lower Smite Farm. Despite the forecast, the weather was kind to us as we arrived.

The day started in the barn, where the children discussed the foods we need to eat to be healthy; they discovered that a balanced diet is the aim, eating something from each food group. After a teamwork sorting activity, placing foods into the correct food group, the children visited the vegetable garden where they had much fun pulling up vegetables and discussing what they could see, hear and touch. With some pumpkins, runner beans, chard and beetroot, we wandered back to the barn.

After lunch, the children were set the challenge of identifying different animals by studying the teeth in various animal skulls. They were fascinated by the different skulls, with the largest belonging to a horse and the most minuscule being that of a shrew.

Unfortunately, the heavens opened, and this meant that we couldn’t visit the woods. However, we carried on inside, and the children loved finding out how hedgehog teeth are designed to shovel their food. The day ended with the children pretending to be hedgehogs, on a hunt for various insects (pictures, not real-life ones!) hidden around the barn.

A fantastic, informative day was had by all.
