King’s Hawford Children Rise to the Challenge at Sports Days
Children at King’s Hawford have thoroughly enjoyed their annual Sports Days, embracing every challenge with enthusiasm despite the rising temperatures.
The events provided a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together, and we are grateful to the many friends and family members who came along to support the children; it was fantastic to see so many smiling faces throughout the events. A special thank you also goes to those who enthusiastically joined in with the grown-ups’ races!
Pre-Prep Sports Day
Pre-Prep Sports Day was a fantastic celebration of energy, determination and enthusiasm, with the children throwing themselves enthusiastically embracing every event.
During the morning, Kindergarten pupils took part in a 30m sprint, a teddy bear/bucket and spade race, and a group relay.
In the afternoon, Reception children enjoyed a 30m sprint, an optional 200m run, an obstacle race and a class relay, before Years 1 and 2 competed in a 50m sprint, an optional 400m race, an obstacle race and class relay races.
The day was very well supported by parents, who enjoyed a picnic lunch with their children on the bottom field between the morning Kindergarten races and the afternoon Pre-Prep events.
Prep Sports Day
Prep pupils enjoyed a fantastic Sports Day, with every child competing in four chosen events and proudly representing their Houses with incredible effort and determination.
The day marked the culmination of a busy summer term of learning and hard work in PE lessons, giving pupils the opportunity to put their skills into practice across both track and field events.
With warm weather forecast, the longer 600m and 800m races were held first thing in the morning, allowing pupils to tackle the distance events before temperatures rose. The remainder of the morning was dedicated to field events, with Years 3 and 4 taking part in long jump, high jump and turbo javelin, while Years 5 and 6 competed in long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put.
The field events produced some outstanding performances, including six new school records. Elliott E set two new Year 3 boys’ records, clearing 1m 15cm in the high jump and throwing 19m 30cm in the turbo javelin. Alice H also enjoyed a record-breaking morning, setting new Year 4 girls’ marks in both the high jump, with 1m 15cm, and the long jump, with 3m 30cm. Further records were achieved by Abi T in the Year 6 girls’ shot put, with a throw of 7m 40cm, and Sam L-C in the Year 6 boys’ javelin, with 32m 40cm.
At lunchtime, parents joined pupils on the bottom field for picnic lunches, creating a lovely community atmosphere before the afternoon track programme began. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 raced over 50m and 150m, while Years 5 and 6 took on the 80m and 200m events.
Despite the increasing heat, the children showed brilliant resilience, effort and enthusiasm throughout the afternoon, producing several excellent times and continuing to support one another across the finish line.
At the end of the day, the Victor and Victrix Ludorum prizes were awarded to the highest-scoring pupils across all of their events. The Junior Girls’ Victrix Ludorum was awarded to Alice H, while Frank O’M received the Junior Boys’ Victor Ludorum. The Senior Girls’ Victrix Ludorum was awarded to Vivienne C, and Sam L-C received the Senior Boys’ Victor Ludorum.
The Kevin Bethell Memorial Shot Put Trophy was also presented to the pupil with the furthest shot put throw of the day. This special award commemorates the much-loved Mr Bethell, a hugely popular teacher at the school, who passed away in October 2020. This year’s winner was Sam L-C, with an impressive throw of 7m 81cm.
The day concluded with the announcement of the overall Sports Day Cup, which was awarded to Kinver House. Bredon finished in second place, followed by Malvern in third and Clent in fourth.
Congratulations to all pupils who took part and contributed to such a memorable and enjoyable Sports Day, full of achievement, encouragement and House spirit. Huge thanks also to all the friends and family who came along to support the children on what was a fantastic day for our school community.
