King’s Fencers Show Skill and Spirit in Exciting Local Fixture

Fencers from King’s produced some excellent performances against RGS in College Hall earlier this week, showcasing fantastic skill in an exciting afternoon of foil fencing.

The match was contested in the team foil format. Typically, each side fields three fencers, but this year’s encounter was adapted to a 2 v 4 arrangement to ensure everyone had a chance to compete. In this format, team scores are cumulative — the first pair fence to 5, the second to 10, and so on — with the final target score set at 40 points.

King’s demonstrated strong form throughout the competition. Giulio and Felix delivered an outstanding performance, taking victory 40–22 after a series of well-timed attacks and disciplined defence. Stella and Ava followed with another strong showing, winning 35–16 through precise point control and confident use of right of way.

Lily and Alex, the least experienced pairing, faced a challenging match against an energetic RGS team. Although they lost 7–15, the bout was cut unexpectedly short, meaning the pair had little time to settle into their rhythm.

The foil, the lightest of fencing’s three weapons, rewards precision and tactical awareness — points are scored by touching the opponent’s torso with the tip of the blade. Only one fencer can score at a time under the “right of way” rule, which adds a strategic layer to each exchange.

Overall, it was an excellent afternoon of fencing, full of energy, sportsmanship, and promise for future fixtures. Both teams can look forward to the return match in March, when King’s will travel to RGS for what is sure to be another keenly contested meeting.
