Year Six pupils experience life at “Big King’s”
With the end of our first term in sight, preparations are already afoot for the next academic year. Last week, Year Six pupils from both of the King’s Foundation’s Prep Schools took part in a transition afternoon at “Big King’s”. Pupils from King’s St Alban’s and King’s Hawford greatly enjoyed their time at the Senior School, familiarising themselves with their new surroundings.
King’s Hawford pupils journeyed across the city to join up with their peers from King’s St Alban’s, and the day started in College Hall as Mr Gareth Doodes, the Headmaster of the King’s Foundation, spoke about King’s’ alumni communities, and told the assembled Year Six pupils about those who had gone before them, notably those whose names have been commemorated on the Roll of Honour boards and the Old Vigornians who fought in the First World War, who have been also been commemorated in the book All the King’s Men.
After their assembly with Mr Doodes, pupils headed to the newly refurbished Lower Years Playground, where they had the opportunity to join pupils from Years Seven and Eight for a cookie. After their break time, pupils then took part in a carousel of different lessons including Art, DT, Drama, Physics and Geography.
Pupils joined together for lunch in the Senior School Dining Room before walking the short distance to King’s St Alban’s. The remainder of lunch-break was spent playing on the playground there, and it was wonderful to witness the progression of friendships across the two Prep Schools.
After lunch, pupils tried out four sports and our impressive sporting facilities, including the Boathouse, gym, and sports halls. It was obvious to all of the staff in attendance that the children had thoroughly enjoyed their day at “Big King’s”: the “erg” competition was a highlight for many.
It was a wonderful day, which forms part of a comprehensive programme of transition events throughout the Prep Schools. Pupils were able to experience what life at “Big King’s” will look like ahead of making the jump to the Senior School next September. We look forward to sharing further details of our extensive transition programme over the coming weeks and months: watch this space!
