Fifth Form Artists Take Inspiration from St Ives on Annual Art Trip
During the recent half-term, Fifth Form Art Pupils embarked on an inspiring journey to Cornwall, where they visited St Ives for their eagerly anticipated annual art trip. Over the course of four immersive days, the students explored the rich artistic heritage of the area, visiting iconic sites and taking part in hands-on workshops with established artists.
The visit began with a trip to Tate St Ives and the renowned Barbara Hepworth Museum, giving pupils insight into the work of both celebrated and emerging artists in the region. Their itinerary included stops at many smaller local galleries, offering a broad and inspiring view of contemporary Cornish art. But beyond the galleries, students took to the landscapes themselves, with outdoor sessions at Cape Cornwall allowing them to paint the dramatic coastal scenery. For many, a session painting the St Ives harbour at night proved a rewarding challenge, adding an atmospheric dimension to their work.
One of the highlights of the trip was a full-day workshop with local artists Sophie Capron, Zoe Eaton, Francesca Owen, and Amy Albright. Each artist shared insights into their own practices, some even inviting the students into their studios. These interactions gave students a unique behind-the-scenes look at the artists’ processes and allowed them to develop pieces inspired directly by the experience.
With sketchbooks filling up rapidly, the pupils’ work during the trip promises to be a significant contribution to their GCSE coursework. Their dedication to capturing the essence of St Ives—its landscapes, light, and vibrant creative scene—is sure to be evident in their submissions. The school looks forward to displaying the fruits of their labour, continuing a tradition of bringing the artistic spirit of St Ives into the classroom.
