King’s Drama Takes London by Storm
With their mock examinations safely behind them, our Fifth Form GCSE pupils and Sixth Form A level Drama & Theatre students were able to throw themselves wholeheartedly into this year’s London Theatre Tour.
Despite the early start on a dreary Saturday morning, spirits were high and, by the time we arrived on the South Bank for our first activity, everyone was raring to go.
Working on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, there were some terrific extract performances produced across the whole group.
Saturday evening’s meal together was very civilised: not just pizza, but pizza with a view!
We then made our way on to the Bridge Theatre and their acclaimed production of Guys and Dolls; we were able to enjoy the party atmosphere fully in the special promenade area, with a chance to get up close and personal with the stars of the show at the end of the evening. The Bridge Theatre provides an immersive experience, meaning our pupils were transported to the streets of Manhattan and right into the centre of the action during this unlikely love story.
Sunday morning’s challenge was to survive a Martian invasion! The War of the Worlds Immersive Experience is a perfect blend of being an audience and joining in with the improvisations, with stunning technical wizardry, including VR, thrown in for good measure.
Thankfully, we had a 100% survival rate so, after a quick lunch break in Covent Garden, we were relieved that the Martians hadn’t destroyed the Duchess Theatre and we could settle down to enjoy the Sunday matinee of The Play That Goes Wrong.
Mischief Theatre’s productions are always riotous affairs, brilliantly written with flawlessly executed slapstick comedy, and it was the perfect uplifting ending to a superb weekend.
As ever, we were indebted to LTT and our terrific guide, Greg, for putting together a remarkably inspiring itinerary. The pupils were a credit to King’s throughout and clearly had a fabulous experience!
